Smith Center, Kansas ... check out these scores

Featured Replies

Class 2-1A team (third-smallest class and smallest of the 11-man groups) in western Kansas that hasn't lost a game since 2003 or so. Here is their MaxPreps page, but check out the scores thus far:

60-0

67-0

66-0

62-0

72-0

72-0

78-0

72-0

And here is last night's boxscore (first round of the playoffs is played on a Tuesday in Kansas):

Plainville 0 0 0 0--0

Smith Center 72 8 3 0--83

Smith Center forced 6 turnovers in the first quarter and outgained Plainville 417-7 ...

... in the first half. The 72 points in the first quarter was a national record.

Outscored their opponents 602-0 so far. If the information I saw is correct, they're riding a 50-game winning streak.

They're playing Lone Oak's schedule? ;)

Have you seen who is from Smith Center, KS? Here are a list of notables that I got off of Wikipedia:

Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, silent film star

Nolan Cromwell, former National Football League safety and current assistant coach

Mitch Holthus, radio announcer for the Kansas City Chiefs

Steve Tasker, National Football League wide receiver

Mark Simoneau, National Football League line backer for the New Orleans Saints

3 NFL players coming from this itsy bitsy town.

Has anyone criticized the coach for running up the scores, not playing 2nd/3rd teamers, etc... Do they have a running clock mercy rule? (apparently not!).

Clock ran in the second half. They went for two in the second quarter and the third-quarter field goal was a third-down play. The JV also hasn't allowed a point this year (against JV teams, although I suspect they give other varsity teams h-e-double hockey sticks when the Smith Center varsity is taken out) and the 8th-grade team has allowed one touchdown.

Smith Center's enrollment in grades 10, 11 and 12 (09/20/2007): 112.

I wonder if they play sophomores on the Freshman team and Juniors on the JV team? Being that their system works, it kinds leads credence that it must be acceptable.....

Sounds like a little football factory. Do they have any D1 talent?

Sounds like the Patriot's farm team in Kansas.

Sounds like their daddies process all of the milk from the other towns where their boys are out in the fields or doing chores in the barns. Is there anyone else in Western Kansas that plays football? Nobaody can be that dominating without their being NO COMPETITION!!

Given their enrollment, I'd guess that their JV team is their freshmen and sophomores. No freshman team per se; drops straight from JV to eighth grade.

When the competition fumbles the ball away six times inside its own 20 --- all in the first quarter --- that's how it ends up. I'd be surprised if anybody gives them a game before the state championship game, when they should come up against the Catholic high school from Pittsburg, Kan.

72 points in the first quarter ... and counting!

Barta, the head football coach at Smith Center (Kan.) High had encouraged his team to get off to a fast start in Tuesday night's Class 2-1A playoff opener against Plainville. Apparently, they listened. The fans had barely settled in their seats, and Smith Center was defeating Plainville 72-0.

And there were still 30 seconds left in the opening quarter.

...

But the record didn't make Barta any more comfortable about a game his team eventually won 83-0. The coach said he did everything he could to keep the score down while making sure his starters got enough reps to prepare for the next round of the playoffs.

...

Smith Center, a 2-1A school of about 150 students in north central Kansas, is known for its high school football. In 30 years at Smith Center, Barta has compiled a record of 269-58. His teams have won six state championships, including each of the past three. The Redmen are currently on a 50-game winning streak, and this year they've outscored their nine opponents by an average margin of 71-0 and a total score of 640-0. They have yet to punt.

...

"I've never seen something like it," Felts said. "No one has. And now people on the outside are asking if he ran up the score while people on the inside are concerned that [Coach Barta's] first-teamers aren't getting enough game action to stay sharp."
