Storming the field

Featured Replies

I totally disagree!

The real issue here is not to let the kids enjoy it. There is the issue of injuries involved with that many people storming the field. Remember "The Who" concert in Cincinnati? Who would have thought something like that might happen?

Ask UK radio broadcaster Tom Leach for his opinion about the fans storming the field. His son suffered a broken arm during the horseplay on the field after the Louisville game.

Also, I have been told that, as of right now, Mitch Barnhart is going to increase security and not going to allow it to happen anyway.

How can you blame anyone but yourself If you get injured running into a crowd of thousands. It's not mandatory to run onto the field. Common sense would have to take over at some point.

Don't want to get hurt, arrested, trampled, or look like an idiot? Easy, don't go on the field.

It was aimed at anyone who'd posted anything like I referenced.

Seriously...$25K isn't a lot of money? What about the next time when it's $50K? Then, you're up to $75K for the season. Do it again? Add on some more moola. You're shortsighted in your thinking.

Lets say its $250k by the time the season is over. UK adds $1 per ticket next season and they've covered their fines and have another $250k for next season's fines.

$250k is peanuts in big-time D1 athletics.

I'm guessing Tom Leach's son is not a college student. Just a guess. If I'm wrong, then :thumb:.

Even more reason he shouldn't have been on the field.:thumb:

As much as I'm OK with storming the field, if the kid is a youngster (say under 13) and he's on the field because his dad has access, he's not fair game.

On the other hand, what did Tom Leach expect to happen with the students?

Would you have your youngter on a field late in the 4th quarter with a lead against a huge rival, knowing there are going to be a influx of crazy, happy, fans storming that field? Not me, I'm pulling her/him out before it gets dangerous. Gotta keep the kids out of harms way.

I do not understand the logic....

Pay $250K for fines that are preventable, and utterly frivolous.

Or spend $250K for needed expenses.

Someone help me understand the logic.

I don't care if boosters are paying. The university should be soliciting money for needed expenses, not fines incurred by rowdy fans.

If Kentucky wins the next 3 games, boosters would gladly pay double fines if I'm guessing.

Not saying it's right, but probably true. I'm no fan of field tromping either.

What exactly constitutes "needed expenses" in D1 sports? New uniforms? New practice facility?

When big time sports need something new, they do one of two thing or both: raise ticket prices/go to boosters.

Rowdy fans also help contribute to the excitment in a program which, studies show, increases enrollment at the university. So, in your world of accounting questions, write this off as "marketing expense."

CSHS, I found a link to Tom Leach's sons injury:

http://www.lex18.com/Global/story.asp?S=7086703

His son was actually in the stands at the bottom and got pushed over a 10 foot wall.

So he wasn't on the field, just a bad accident. You're right, he wasn't fair game.:thumb:

This type of thing would be the only valid argument against storming the field. Although, I guess I'd ask why he was in front of the student section.

Yeah, you would think that ol' Tom could have commandeered some choices seats.:D

I know I caught some flak a couple weeks ago for saying that UK fans shouldn't have rushed the field after the UL game. Now we're 5-0 and ranked in the Top 10 nationally. I think this makes the storming the field question even more pertinent. Who do we rush for and who don't we? Here's my take-

LSU- Yes.

Florida- No.

MSU- Of course not.

UT- No.

Thoughts?

Are you kidding? UK would totally rush the field if they won any of those games except MSU. Heck, I think they tore down the goal posts when they beat a pretty bad Alabama team several years ago and there was talk of rushing the field if they could have beaten a down Tennessee team a couple years ago.

I think if there is a W against LSU or Florida, you will see some arrests to deter getting on the field in the future.

There were arrests made last year at the Georgia game...that didn't really stop fans from going down against Lousiville. If we beat LSU, Florida, or Tennessee, it will happen again. 100 cops can't stop 10,000 crazy, drunken fans.
