Harlan County High School

Featured Replies

I going to go with David Davies from Harlan High School. He is an offensive football genius and his name seems to be coming up a lot for this job. I also heard that Jeffery Bittner (a well known man from the Evarts area) is going to be hired as the head baseball coach. Just speculations,

Come on wags that is William Jeffery Bittner aka Speedy. I am sure he will be offered.

It's a shame that at best 2 good coaches who have given a lot to the county schools will be out of a job after this year.

Hilton, Holcomb, Derossett, and Matney I believe are all out of the question. All 4 of those coaches are already established at strong programs, with their feeder system in place, and nice salaries.

With no disrespect intended, why would you want to leave a program that is already well respected at a state level, for a fledgling program with a ton of question marks? As history suggests, it takes a while for consolidated schools to establish themselves on the big stage. In East KY alone look at the success of Perry Central, Letcher Central, and East Ridge.

The best choice for Harlan County would be to go after a young coach without the huge price tag attached, with local ties, and a successful track record of working with struggling programs.

Additionally, looking at that list, Hilliard Howard won't venture much further from Pikeville than he already is right now. I think he is perfectly content at LCC grooming his son as a coach, and where the expectations aren't unreal, so he can lock it in cruise control if need be until retirement.

I doubt any of them will be out of a job. My guess is that they'll have the opportunity to be on the coaching staff.

Dont be surprised if Mr Mike Holcomb from Breathitt County is named the new head coach and either Tuck Woolum or his brother that coaches in Florida or possibly even both Woolums be named assistants, and IMO that would make for a pretty solid coaching staff with a lot of succesfull football history coming to Harlan County.

I would say if Coach Mike Holcomb goes he will make them a very coach,he has done well here at Breathitt Co. and i still cant see him leaving with what he has coming up,but everyone has a price $$$$$$.$$,dont you think, and again i dont look for Holcomb to coach but 3-4 more yrs(get outta the rat race take it easy) he can retire and he maybe in top or the top winningness coach in state ,surely "Hall of Fame" coach and thats facts, but he has a grandson that wants him as coach so just have to wait and see, (Dudley Hilton was first "good "coach here in Breathitt Co. in '70's and early '80's,and then Mike Holcomb took the regins been here 25 yrs and won "THREE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS" (95,96,2002)and made things bettter, you dont see that long of stay in Coaching these days) put Breathitt Co. on Map in Football for sure in this state...Now we all know they can't coach forever so if Coach leaves i would think they are someone to take his place maybe not as good but thats only way you can look at it and wish them Good LUCK,and Congrats them on Job well Done for Bobcats......Go Bobcats.......Would hate to see him go but hey thats LIFE....

I say the Job a Harlan Central would look better to some of these coaches if it was down in flat country, cause most all good coaches wants to see what it would be like to start all over,i would think, and if the $$$$$ figure is there, but locaton may hurt them from getting some of the better coaches to come and being 5A or 6A school would make a differance too dont you think....

Holcomb has done a great job at Breathitt, as Dudley did before him, WOW isnt that amazing what great coaches you guys have had over there (two of the best all time in the mountains and in Kentucky) and if we could get either one of them over here it would be great. I think the thing about guys like Hilton and Holcomb is that they might possibly be interested in a new challenge, especially Holcomb. Dudley has already proven he can go somewhere else and win a State championship (Bourbon County) maybe it is Holcomb's turn to do the same at (Harlan county)

My vote goes to Holcomb. I have heard that Superintendent Tim Saylor does not want Holcomb because he likes to throw the ball. I don't believe that to be true, however.

Cawoodballplayer I don't know where you got your info but I am almost positive that Tim would love to have someone like Holcomb take over this program next year but I don't think Holcomb's wife is wanting to move.

I have no idea who will get this job. To be honest at first I was hating this consolidation all together because I did not want to lose my school. But, I have come around because I know that it is best for the kids of this county and now I am so excited about this whole thing getting started. It will be interesting who Harlan County will hire but no matter who it is I think that we as Harlan Countians should rally behind him and the team (school) and make this the best experience for these county kids possible.

GO BLACK BEARS!!!!!!!!!!!

Speaking of Speedy, where has he been? Maybe the Dragons woes are due to his absence. Anybody know why he has not been on the sidelines?

I don't know Pappy, I was wondering the same thing. The last time I saw him was about 3-4 months ago riding a bicycle down Main St. I noticed I haven't seen him running around catching footballs this year.
