Did anyone else besides me see the post game interview with Tom Larkey? He didn't really give Bell much credit, and said something to the effect of just how Bell Co. FINALLY be Rock. Didn't show much class at all.

 

Thats just Larkey. That was pretty much his response after JC beat them in the Regional Finals last year 29-7. He made the remark that Rock beat themselves, not JC. Sometimes the other team is the better team, and he needs to accept that.

I could see him saying that if it was a close game, and a few mistakes cost them the game...but 24-0???? c'mon now.

56 yard FG was 2 yards shy of the State record , and all of his kicks on kickoffs sailed through the endzone

 

Scary part Is this kid is just a JR ,What a bright future he has.

 

Here's a picture of Merrick kicking the 56-yard field goal against Rockcastle with about 2 seconds left on the clock before half-time.

 

I thought it was really impressive how the field goal unit and the rest of the team on the sidelines just ran off the field and straight to the locker room after the kick. There was no excessive celebration by the team. They left that to the fans who were going crazy afterwards!

Great Pic. Coach Larkey is a class act but his comments where a little out of character. I suppose he was happy it was only 24-0 b/c it could have been worse.

I didn't really take offense to it, it wasn't all that bad. The way he talks is basically his personality. He is kindof dry. Him and Coach Hilton are both outstanding coaches, Coach Hilton has him beat as far as being a more entertaining interviewer.

I'm sure 4Chs was referring to the comments that Rockcastle and Bell don't "run" from each other like other teams..(Middlesboro and Corbin??) and by not doing so they build each others programs up. The only problem with the statement is that Rock and Bell are district rivals...they HAVE to play each other now days. Hilton is still realing from the Corbin and Middlesboro teams not wanting to maintain the area rivalry that has gone on for years. We have discussed that far too much on other threads. I would have loved to have seen last year's Middlesboro team against Bell then...and this year's Corbin team against Bell. Fans are missing great games....and Cashen and Nelson should have had their Senior showdown after competing together all their careers.

This is one thing I am fine with Coach Hilton talking about as much as possible. Bell is having a hard time filling the schedule and have to travel and play 7 games this season on the road. Corbin really messed Bell up this season. Also it makes absolutely no sense for either team to drop Bell other than not wanting another L on the schedule every year. It is the largest regular season gate of the year for Mboro, and other than maybe South Laurel I am sure it is for Corbin as well.

Coach Hilton would not have to "run his mouth" if Corbin would not have put Bell in a bad position and quit playing the Bobcats. Besides Coach Hilton did not mention Corbin individually. But Coach Hilton did not get where he is by dodging tough rivalry opponents.

I certainly agree. Coach Hilton is a great guy when you get to know him. He motivates his kids to play hard. He wants to win, but he wants the boys to achieve something that will teach them about life. Hard work does pay off. He stated the other day, I believe, in paper, that these close rivalry games are "relived" for years and are part of a great tradition. "Braggin rights" for kids in the area (and they certainly shift from town to town....Bell is still down probably to most in the overall win catagory of the historic rivalries). He is concentrating now on leading these boys to another state title. It will be his third if Bell continues on....but for these Seniors....its their only chance! He wants it for them. I hope the Redhounds are with us in Louisville....would make for a great SE KY celebration! But there is a lot of work to be done in meantime.....Rockcastle II will be showing in November on Log Mountain, I presume. Should be a great sequel! LOL!
