Just to expand on the basics of betting...

 

It would be easy to just bet winners and losers of games. Thus, point spreads are created. Point spreads allow teams to be evaluated on equal terms.

 

For example, the line for the Seahawk game is (-6). That means that Seattle is favored by 6 points over Tampa Bay. Basically, in betting world, Tampa Bay is spotted six points from the onset of the game. When you bet, you are trying to determine if Seattle will win by more than 6, or less than 6 points.

 

FYI... Tampa Bay (+6) vs. Seattle is the exact same thing as saying Tampa Bay vs. Seattle (-6).

Personally, I could never bet on the NFL. The teams are so good (or at least evenly matched) it is so hard to evaluate.

By about week 3 the lines in the NFL are so good its scary.

Early season is the farthest you will see the lines miss by, they be real tight by midseason.
