Best Player in NEKY????

Featured Replies

Grim has to be #1

Also-Thomas, Ashland RB (Name?), Boyles,Jones

Cox kid from Mason County is one of the best athletes. He is being recruited by D-1 schools for QB/SS/ATH.

Brett Denton-RB/LB RACELAND

Tyler Jones-Anywhere on "D" RUSSELL

If we are talking best players, and not best athletes, I would say(in no particular order):

Brett Denton RB/LB Raceland

Tyler Boyles QB Raceland

Tyler Jones QB/DE Russell

Matt Thomas QB/DB Ashland

Carter RB Ashland

Grimm RB Johnson Central

I'm surprised you didn't list the Sparks kid. I didn't get to see the game, but I heard he was dominant against Ashland.

Who couldnt get 200+ yards if you ran the ball for JC like Grimm - no disrespect against Grimm but JC has a pretty good line and team. Best football player would be hard to call because you may be the best player but on the worst team. I am going to have to go with Sparks from Raceland just because he is so versital(?).

After week #1, I might say Raceland's most important player is Sparks.

Trust me I think Jacob Sparks is a very good player. To start with I did not want to hear the "homer" talk, I already picked two Raceland players, Denton and Boyles. This is Sparks' first year for playing on offense, before he was only performing kicking duties, which he has developed into a very good kicker. But, until this year, he did not want to play offense/defense, due to possible injury for basketball. He, thank God, decided this year that he wanted to play offense. If Sparks would have played all four years, everyone would know his name, he would be awesome.

As for Denton, he is a very versatile player. He is a very fast and allusive RB, that runs with authority. He is also a dominate defensive player, who I believe will lead the Raceland defense in tackles this year. On special teams, he normally beats the ball down field on kickoffs and punts, he plays full speed the entire game.

Boyles, is a very intelligent player with big play potential. He is very well suited for the QB position and makes very good decisions. He is leading the offense and doing it well. He played WR the last two years and understands the pass patterns very well because of it, he know both ends of the passing game, and distributes the ball well and puts the WR's in good position to make runs after the catch.

Sparks, is a very good WR. He has the size and decent speed. DB's are going to have trouble covering him. Great hands and he runs good crisp routes. That is not even mentioning his kicking ability. He is going to put a lot of teams in position where they are going to have to march 80 yards to score. Plus, if Raceland's offense crosses the 35 yard line they are in field goal range. He has been kicking 55 yrd FG in practice, with room to spare. I know that is practice, but still pretty impressive.

Tyler Jones is IMO the best football player in the area. His combination of speed, strength and determination set him apart. He could play any position on the field and still be dominant.

What is it with Raceland and great kickers????

Do they go to a coach or this is all self taught?

To be honest, the kicking game is an aspect of the game that is very important, but most programs do not invasive it. Pettrey was just a phenomenal kicker, and not to bad of a punter. He practiced relentlessly, he never practiced kicking during practice, because he played WR/QB, but after practice he would practice kicking for another half hour. You could drive down US 23 on the week ends during the off season and Aaron was practicing kicking. He knew what he wanted, a D1 scholarship, and he got it. He had D2 and D3 scholarship offers to play other positions, but he wanted a D1 scholarship.

Now with Sparks. He wanted to kick, and Pettrey tough him to kick, and I might add, did a good job of it. Sparks to has practiced relentlessly. Sparks was not a great kicker when he started his freshman year, but he has become a great kicker.

Matt Boyd was a great Punter, who punted until Pettrey's senior year. Boyd went to Morehead and was the punter there. He worked hard to become a good punter. When he was punting and Pettrey was place kicking, Raceland won a lot of games because of the kicking game. That is one aspect of the game that will kill you if you don't have it.

Raceland coaches put a priority on the kicking game, and sent players to kicking/punting camps if they want to learn to kick. This only makes the coaches job easier. Though this effort, Raceland's special teams has become a source of pride, and the young players want to learn to kick, and they make special teams a priority.

Well if you want to play college and pro ball, then kicking is the easiest way.

Tyler Jones is the best player I have seen on the field. I think our friends from Greenup and Boyd county would agree that he is the number one player. Maybe next week our friends from Ashland will agree. The other players mentioned are also very good. Jones is the best IMO.

I agree Jones is very high on the list, as is Grimm. I would say solely on game performance in the first two weeks, that those two are one and two - not sure which is one, but still one and two.

Basically each team has at least one very talented player

Raceland - Denton

Russell - Jones

Greenup - Craft

Ashland - Thomas

Boyd Co - Barker

and so on.
