Mayfield/Christian County Scrimmage

Featured Replies

Just got word from Coach Morris that the scrimmage for this Friday has been moved back to 6pm at the practice field. Hope to see all Cards fans out at the practice field at the school this coming Friday.

Not a problem...figured most of the Cards posters on here would want to know about the new start time for the scrimmage

I hope there offense improves from last week...There defense, for the most part, was pretty good. There passing game may be a little better than I initially thought, as Armstrong throws a nice ball and has a pretty strong arm, and the pass blocking was decent, but, there run blocking needs some work.

Mayfield always pretty much looks sluggish in the first scrimmage of the season...even their past state championship teams...you will see Mayfield's offense improve greatly throughout the season and come mid-season and more importantly playoffs you will see a very good offense that will be able to hurt you in many different areas.

By the end of the season (IF everyone stays healthy) then this team has the POTENTIAL to be very dangerous and should make a strong push for a run to the carpet...and luckily the road to Louisville will come west this year.

Hopefully mayfield can get it goingthis year, with the new class system they should run the show along w/ beechwood.

Christian Co 3 varsity scores topped Mayfield who had 2 varsity scores at Mayfield this evening

Interesting. I heard Christian County looked like crap last week in the first scrimmage.

Mayfield looked pretty good I thought, not sure what to say for Christian. I'll post more on the game after I get some food. I just got in from the scrimmage and food calls. In the meantime maybe someone else that went can fill in

Man, first off...There was like 400 people there...I was like "there are more people here than at some of the district games." Definitely football hungry in Mayfield right now! Mayfield did lose but they played fairly well after a slow start...

My observations:

1.The Cards have like 5 running backs that are very solid-some hardnosed & some very fast...:thumb:

2.Logan Armstrong looked decent at QB and will be fine as the season progresses! Threw a nicer ball than I expected.

3.Xavier Shelton looked very good in the slot and is tall and quick with good hands for a sophomore, I believe he is.

4.Mayfield's Run Defense is going to be very very good but their secondary has got a lot of improving to do!

Overall, I think Mayfield is going to be just fine & it looks like Mayfield ex-principal Steve Trayhnam is really adding something to the already strong Mayfield staff he was coaching hard & teaching all night.

NOTE ON CHRISTIAN COUNTY: They have some players...Ramon at RB or something like that made like 5 big hits, had several long runs, and picked a pass off. Looks like Coach Lovelace is going to have a good core.

They didn't look too bad tonight, I heard they looked better last week against Milan TN. I believe that Nick Walter broke his arm, he was #31 in the scrimmage, he was going to be the back up QB from what I heard but he looks to be out I would say until the middle of the season I would say, it looked horrible. Anyways, Christian scored on us on a big pass play to start out and the extra point was blocked. I think then it was back and forth for quite a while and we scored on big pass play of our own to Xavier Shelton I believe, not quite sure. Not sure what was going on with our passing game, our receivers didn't seem to know their routes or something. We had one good drive with several running plays and coughed it up close to the endzone. Our other score was on a series of run plays I believe with Murrell making the big breakout run towards the end on what looked like a misdirection, but it was pretty dark and getting hard to see, lol. I think another one of Christians scores came from a series of run plays, I am not sure, maybe someone that kept up with everything can fill in these gaps I am leaving, lol.

All in all I heard that we didn't look as good as last week against Milan but I thought we looked decent, we need to work on a few things for sure like our pass defense, run defense and I couldn't tell why our backs weren't getting the blocks they needed. Luke Guhy looked pretty good IMO and I think that the Noonan kid was just having a tough time, he had a few breakaway runs but I just couldn't get a good feel for him tonight. Not sure who #8 was but he was an athlete for sure, he just needs to work on his hands with the ball and is going to be something. Oh well, thats my 2 cents, please, anybody else feel free to fill in with what they saw.

Man, you ain't kidding, I haven't seen that many at district games, I was really pleased!! I just hope it continues throughout the whole season!!

Mayfield was solid against the run til late when I feel that they wore down and the shear numbers advantage of Christian took hold. Mayfield will need to improve on their pass defense that looked great at times then boom they gave up the big play. I actually felt that the Cards defense is ahead of where I thought it would be this early. Offensively for Mayfield Armstrong looked pretty good at QB and had some early balls dropped that hit his recievers in the hands. Mayfield also coughed the ball up a couple of times and that hurt them. Mayfield's younger kids are amazing, I cant imagine what they will be like in a couple years. Overall good outing for the Cards

Yeah, those talented underclassmen are going to have to grow up quick and contribute for Mayfield to be a contender for the title. They do show alot of promise, though...I just hate to have to rely on freshmen and sophmores. So is the life of a 1a football team, I guess....
