Russell/Spring Valley, WV Scrimmage

Featured Replies

I also agree with Goherd, Fball, Jeepman etc. that watching the Scrimmages and where the players are playing is by no means where we will see them on the 24th. At one point when the "1st" team defense was out there, I saw Ivan and Coach Morris switch at least 3 of the players in and out into different positions. DE to LB to Hawk (Strong Safety) and about 5 or 6 of them in and out just for breaks and yet Spring Valley's "1st" did not score on them.

Now for the offense, I echo some of the other poster's that each of the runners that ran with the 1st team showed some inconsistency, but I thank that will fix itself the more reps they get in practices and scrimmages they get. Remember all of these runners are 1st time Varsity starters and it takes time to get that cohesion with your o-line. We were spoiled with Gross and Clark for the last 5+ years, but I beleive one or more of these runners will come to the forefront by the start of district play.

I thought Bailey looked the best of the RBs as far as seeing the hole and knowing when to make the cut. That is something that is hard for some backs to do.

Abrams and Cordle also looked pretty good in the backfield. IMO it is going to be hard to keep Rice out of the backfield for long. He lucked real good running the trap from the FB spot.

One thing I did not like was the Offensive line. They came off the ball fine. But they need to sustain their blocks. It looked to me like they gave up on them a little quick.

He is still lined up at the QB spot. If you would have seen him last year and his ability to break tackles and run over people (ask some of the Belfry folks about the TD pass where it looked like he was sacked), then you would understand the reason why there is talk of playing him at RB. But it is hard to move a kid that played QB in the last two state championship games. Also if he does move to LB do you want your starting QB playing insided LB as well? Either way he is a big strong kid that will do great things.

You are correct, 95% of the QB;'s in the state would either fumble the football, take a sack, or throw a wounded duck on the two plays were Jones delivered a strike. To clarify for those not there, on one pass Jones gets absolutely decleated as he releases the ball, but had enough upper body strngth to deliver a strike while falling down with no vision of the WR. The other play Belfry had what appeared to be an easy sack from the blindside, Jones gets drilled, keeps his balance, shrugs off the defender, and right as he gets hit again delivers another TD pass.

I said it last year and will say it again, Belfry's defense played well enough to win. It wasn't Kasey Clark who beat Belfry, it was Jones on offense, and Wills on defense. Jones earned my respect that night no matter where you line him up.

I agree with you about rice, I really believe you'll see him at fullback on friday night against Greenup. Nice point about the o-line. I was impressed with the fire off the ball, but didn't notice the lack of sustaining on their blocks. I'm going to watch for that tomorrow.

On that point, I don't know all the intricacies(sp?) of the Wing-T, but I have watched the guards (wills/foster) last year and (foster/boyd) this year, and when they are not pulling, they fire off the ball, letting the d. tackle come on through and they head straight to the LB's and Safeties. Someone out here that is smarter than me, can tell me if that is a feature of the Wing-T offense or not.

Virtually every running play in the wing-t as run by Russell involves a trap. If you see someone come through untouched, watch to see if the opposite guard isn't pulling and looking for him...

If you remember Matt Thompson on the 2002 team, more than one defensive player stopped crossing the LOS after he leveled them on a trap block. In the second half of games, it wasn't unusual to see kids backing up at the snap after taking him on early.

This is the first time that I have been on a discussion where I expressed criticism of a team and I was not racked over the hot coals by their supporters. Gentlemen, I would like to applaud each of you for your deligent and well thought out responses and comments about the team and my criticism. This is what BGP is about IMO. Kudos to every poster on this thread.

You idiot. How on earth could you make such a bone headed commit.:D

Just kidding. If you criticize some teams that is what you will get. But, the more mature people on BGP will not get so bent.

Yes it is depending upon the defensive alignment and what play is called. Generally everyone blocks down and the man to be trapped is left free for the pulling gaurd to kick out.

On trap, sweep, down, jetsweep there is always a guard pulling or trapping. About the only play that they won't have a guard pulling or trapping is a dive to the fullback. Most coaches even pull guard out on waggle pass.:thumb:

I didn't get to see the Belfry/Boyd scrimmage. If I had to guess I would say both scrimmages were similar. 10 and 10, alot of people in and out and being tried in different positions. There was not much flow just a chance to work and hit.

Russell did hit and should be pretty good again. I would imagine Belfry looked more cohesive at this point due to the large number of returning starters on the offensive and defensive lines.

I spoke with Coach Evans and he said Belfry looked impressive. He said they are a typical Belfry team who will stuff the ball down your throat. He was very impressed with them. I quote " They must have a machine down there that manufactures 6'4 230 pd kids "

What time is the scrimmage tonight????
