Dixie/Conner Scrimmage

I arrived a little late for the festivities as my six year old didn't quite get in the spirit as quickly as I did this morning, only to be greeted with a dismal report of how Dixie had played thus far. At that time each team was doing the 10 and 10. Conner scored on a field goal early.

The defense for the colonels missed one tackle after another over the next half hour and I was begining to feel as though it might be a long year. Then the two's went in and a spark of hope emerged. A pair of junior QB's rotated for Dixie and as the JV moved the ball quite well. I believe that when the JV portion was over it was 7-3 but the score board wasn't lit.

Then came the varsity teams in a more realistic 3 and out scenario. Dixie moved the ball right down the field and scored. Lighting up the score board with 7-0. On the next series the defense held the Cougars and made them punt, but the O fell flat on their face. As the game progressed Conner kicked two more field goals against the classic bend don't break Defense of the Colonels to make it 7-6 (or 14-9 depending on how your counting.) As time expired the Dixie O was rolling again and looked like I expected them too.

Overall there was too many dropped passes and missed tackles for the Red and Grey to beat their chest too loudly, but I'm sure that will be addressed.

I was surprised by the quality of Conner's team. For a never talked about program they seemed pretty good. The QB threw a nice ball and they have a RB that is top notch. Don't ask me numbers cause they didn't have any.

Half of our team was red and the other half white, why I have no idea but I think that somebody didn't get the memo.:D Players that stood out to me for Dixie were #'s 20, 24.(both soph's I think) and 26 Jr. Conner Brock on O along with an excellent block from 76? on a broken play. The line play on both sides of the ball was pretty good. The usual players we have come to depend on such as Bricking, Detmer, Maloney, Easthan, Freeman, Benson, and so on all played well IMO.

I did not see any signs of fatigue, but hey it wasn't a full game either. Next week's superbowl matchup should be pretty interesting.

All in all, it was a successful scrimmage on both sides.

Conner did have one TD (Run) that was called back for a penalty, but other than that the ref's kept the yellow rag in their pocket most of the day. I saw quite a few infractions that went purposefully uncalled on both sides, most of which the refs and coaches used to educate. Absent but on the side lines was Jared Lucas, not sure what the deal was but he was dressed. Hopefully he will get whatever is keeping him off the field taken care of because the team could use him.

The entire Varsity scrimmage was game situation. It did not start out 10 and 10. Dixie got one first down on their opening possesion then punted and it was downed on the Cougar 4 yard line. Conner then drove down to the Dixie 12 and stalled Soph. kicker made the feild goal attempt. This opening drive was very impressive by the Cougars. They started a Soph at QB on that opening drive he looked very calm and comfortable running the triple option and passes to the flat.

Conner's next posseion they brought in a different QB. Offense did not look as sharp. Conner's punter booted the ball very nicely.

Dixie's offense definetly got sharper in the second half of the scrimmage. QB made quicker more decisive decisions hitting the quick hitches and bubble type screens. But I think what sparked Dixie was the hard running of #21.

Conner looked much more organized. With a lot more enthusiasum and instruction from the coaching staff!!

Conner looked better than anticipated and to top it off they play a lot of Soph.'s.

Sorry, I could have sworn that it was 10 and 10, but I may have been so wrapped up in dissapointment that I didn't notice the game situation until the two's went in.

I distinctly remember the ref's telling the coaches what number of play it was and that is why I said that.

I saw the early portion. A bit like you would expect so early. I thought Conner's O showed some signs of life. The option play worked OK. The qb was solid. Nice kicker for the Cougars.

Dixie's O struggled early although I like their passing scheme and think they will be a tough matchup for most high school defensive backfields.

I would not rule Conner out of the NKY 6A just yet.

To be honest I didn't expect much out of the cougars and they impressed me. It's still early but they might just be the sleeper of 6A in NKY.

Also, Conner Brock will be a household name before this seasons over. :thumb:

The JV did 10 and 10.

I do think Dixie will be hard to handle as the year goes on. Simply because their timing on the passing game will improve. Several times QB was a little late on some deep outs toward the Dixie sideline. Later in the year they will start connecting on those, that will compliment the hitches, bubble and dig routes they hit in the scrimmage.

I thought they had two QB's but how can you tell with no numbers.

Number 21 is Marty Maloney and he is a load. Marty has been running like that and sparking the team for three years now. I was glad to see the same fire in him today as he had when he was a sophmore.

The biggest most promissing thing for Dixie IMO was the number of kids on the field who obviously hit the weights pretty hard in the off season. It gives me a glimmer of hope that things are finally changing.:D

I wanted to go however, I had to work. I am glad Conner Brock played well and I have watched him for several years and with his quickness and speed I Knew he would be a good running back. He is a very fine young man. JD

I was impressed with the Conner team this morning. It was obvious early on Conner was ready to play and Dixie was not. Dixie finally got going later in the scrimmage. I just don't know if either team wanted to show too much. Both teams have plenty of work to do.

I would call it pretty even. Both teams have plenty to work on and I know Dixie starts the season slow. I was very impressed with the way the young Conner team played. Dixie looks as if they are trying to figure out what they have. I think both teams will make some noise in thier districts.:thumb:

Was the Kicker Senior Lady Cougar Soccer Star Olivia Brock? If it was, she does indeed have a very strong, leg.

It's early SM , but I was surprised with Conner ! I liked there QB and they had 2 nice RB's that could move . Both had some nice run's ! Dixie did come out alittle flat today to start , but picked it up . What I saw from the O and D line I liked alot ! They had a nice rotation of players going in and out ! The D had some breakdowns , but I seen some ears getting bent ! I still think there trying alot of players in spots ! Will see next week at the SUPERBOWL !!!:thumb:

No. Olivia dressed but I did not see her kick.....The kicker with the leg today was sophmore Aaron Stevens......rail thin kid...... with a huge leg! Hit two very nice field goals today with poise for a soph.
