Why in the world does high school golf start so early?

Regional tournament is scheduled on the last Monday/Tuesday of September. Short season. By starting basically at the beginning of Aug, you get two months before regionals.

 

With the sun setting earlier in September, some times he gets tough to get matches in late in September. Some rural schools travel and hour to the match and it does not start till 4:30.

 

You cannot have state tournament going too late into October. Presently, I believe it is scheduled first week in October.

Sounds like a wonderful answer. We are one of those rural places that sometimes don't get a match started until 4:30, 5ish.

The thing that I do not like about high school season starting so early is the lack of practice before the first scheduled competition. For example, this year my team had tryouts from July 16-18. That only gives me 12 days to have some practices and find out who my top 5 are going to be for the first couple of tournaments. The KHSAA will tell you that high school golfers have all summer to practice and that 2 weeks is plenty of time to get a team prepared. I really don't think it is.

So say you only play 18 a day, which more can be played.

 

Since high school match rounds are 9 holes, that gives you 24 rounds to go over to decide your top 5. That's not enough?

That would be plenty, but I also like to have some actual practices in that time frame as well. Plus, we don't practice/play on Sat. or Sun. and we can't have practice on Thursday due to a conflict at our home course.

Ok, I thought you were saying 12 practice days. Alreafy not counting Sat/Sun.

I think the golf season would be better if we could move it to the spring like the colleges have it! Seems like the timing would be a lot better for it, not as hot on the kids either. Middle of July and August are the hottest times of the year and the kids have to be out walking carrying their bags, not good! Like this week, most can't even practice with humidity levels at over 110 in some places. Just my opinion, but colleges have it in the spring, so should the high school kids!

Actually most colleges have what amounts to two seasons--Fall is considered "non-traditional" I believe they commonly call it, and Spring is the "Traditional" season, when they play for regional titles and the NCAA's!! Many states HS seasons are in the spring as well, but you do have to battle unpredictable weather and especially rain?? Agree on the heat though, and the state tourney has been known to be COLD in early October!!

Golf season in Kentucky was always spring until about 15 years ago. When I played in the 80's tryouts were usually the first week of March and twice we played in the snow after not playing for 4 months. Then once the season started in late March you generally got 1/4 to 1/2 your matches rained out. Then after you graduated and high school was over you went to the state tournament in June ? Spring golf was horrible and will never be back, with dates in August and Sept. you have about 1 rainout every 2 years, the players have been playing all summer and should be in better form and the whole thing wraps up by the 1st week in October.

agreed... the weather is a little bit on the hot side in august but the rain is not really much of a factor at all... I cant remember a match being rained out my last 2 years of hs golf

Matches are 9 holes because after school that is what you can get in.

 

Tournaments, of which we have already played two, are 18 hole affairs.
