Dr. Albert Mohler Responds to the Pope's message

"When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ He said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’ A second time he said to him, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love me?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ He said to him, ‘Tend my sheep.’ He said to him the third time, ‘Simon, son of John, do you love me?’ Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ And he said to him, ‘Lord, you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep’" (John 21:15-17).

You know in this verse, Peter is getting ready to sin by Denying Christ 3 times, that right there shows him to just be a common man like the rest of us.

Peter after proclaiming who Jesus Christ is will disown him later. Not once but three times. This Disciple leader does a complete turnaround later and is there on the Day of Pentecost where the Christian church started.

In the statement by Christ "who do men say I am?" He wanted them to actually say out loud, what the others have said about him. Peter was the first to realize the true deity of Jesus.

In verse 18...the disciples of Jesus didn't know that the new church would also be for the Gentiles too, not just the Jews. And the nonbelievers would not be able to stop the believers.

19...The keys will open the doors to people who do not of Jesus's ministry. Peter being the leader of the group would also be the leader of the church starting.

When do you think the bolded really happened? And I am not sure he was the first. I believe one of his disciples that were female was the first. As they seemed to have a better handle of what was going on rather than the males in the picture. :D

Ladies, I agree about the women, even today they have a different way of seeing things before the guys do. They boldly went to his grave as the disciples huddled in the upper room worried about themselves, this included Peter the rock.

Actually, this particular event took place after Peter denied Christ three times.

The passage in John 21 took place after the resurrection...Peter denied Christ during His trial. :thumb:

Ooops. I'm contributing to getting off topic.

The topic is the SBC's response to the Vatican's statement on the Roman Catholic Church being the only true church.

I like the response and think it's accurate.

Thanks. It had been so long since I'd seen the actual topic discussed I had forgotten what it was. ;)

Which desciple do you believe it was and can you lead me to the scripture that leads you to believe this way. I do not have a view opposing what you believe actually I have never thought about who was the first person to realize the deity of Christ and would like to study on it.

The P & R threads have really helped me dive into the scripture way more often than I was before I joined BGP(which I actually joined to look at the football forum). and for that I feel blessed to be apart of BGP. I don't know if anyone has realized this but all these threads are is a great number of Christian discusing Gods word in order to better understand the word. This in a whole strengthens our faith as Christians or at least it has mine and I am thankfull to each and every one of you. May God Bless you all!

I have experienced the same thing, :thumb:

It's funny how things work on BGP...I joined a few years ago to talk about high school football (Breathitt County...and the rest of East KY football, mainly, Belfry, P'burgh, Hazard, etc.)...now, I rarely discuss high school football.

I love the religious discussions. They're my favorite on the site and that was something I didn't even consider when I joined. And, I agree...they've really lead me to study the Bible more and I've learned a ton and really grown a lot as a Christian thanks to some of these threads. :thumb:

And hopefully these threads educate us about each other and help tear down prejudices between Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

Amen, and again I say Amen!

I fully agree with Mohler's statement. I was not offended by the Pope's comments. If the Pope seriously believes in the Catholic faith, he should have the opinion he stated. Same goes for Mohler. And me.

Ditto. In fact, if the Pope didn't say it I would wonder why not. I believe anyone who professes to be a devout Catholic will hold to these same views. If not, they do not understand the teachings of their faith. Anyone who professes any certain faith and considers themselves "devout" would readily admit to its teachings. To not do so would be dishonest.

Mary. Jesus' mother, would be my first guess since the angel did tell her whom she was carrying.

After the resurrection, I would believe it was the woman who found the empty tomb.

On your last paragraph, Jesus said where two or more of you gather in my name, I will be there. So my view, Jesus is right here with us as we discuss these topics and this is as much "church" as a Sunday morning (Saturday evenings for my Catholic friends:D ) worship services. Church and worshipping is not limited to a building or Sunday morning.

That does not mean you should skip your Sunday morning worship services, saying you worship at BGP Christian Community Church this week.;)
