Ashland Post 76

Recommended Posts

After a slow start the sixers have come together to become a very solid team. They have won something like 15 of their last 20 and seem to be a very solid looking team heading down the home stretch. They hit the ball well up and down the lineup and are solid defensively, with 3 or 4 nice pitchers this team has a chance to win each time it takes the field.

The most noticable thing with watching this team the last couple of weeks is how they have evolved into a team instead of a bunch of indivuals playing the game.

If they improve as much over the next 2 weeks as they have the last 2 this could be a very good team come tourny time.

Post 76 always seems to have a good baseball team. This years team has a solid group of players that have tremendous talent. Lewis does a good job getting the players to mesh.

I played for Post 76 back in the 70's so I always try and keep up with how they are doing.

American Legion baseball has great competition and is fun to watch.

I think the slow start could be attributed to several things.

A) You had two groups of players from Johnson Central and Greenup Co. that joined the team a couple of weeks late due to those two respective teams playing at Applebees.

B) A couple of kids that joined the team a couple of weeks late due to wanting to take a week or so off after the regular season to catch their breaths and to get ready to go at it again.

C) A couple of kids that may not have had the interests of the TEAM CONCEPT in mind before departing a few weeks ago.

D) Just nothing simply more than Coach Lewis trying to find the right combination in the right positions for a group of new kids on the block that would mesh.

Post 76 has been a lot of fun to watch. I have especially enjoyed watching this group of young men bond with each other and genuinely see them care for one another and respect the friendships they have forged. There is nothing more enjoyable than summer baseball , not only for the players but for the parents and for the fans if everyone involved is truely interested in going out and playing hard each and every night while demonstrating a true respect for the game.

I agree with cvillecat in that this is a very talented group of players in which the biggest majority of will be playing at the college level next year. Kudos to Coach Lewis and his staff on doing a great job with this group of fine young men. It has been a very enjoyable summer.

Nice win over a good Ceredo-Kenova team in Boyd Co. tournament. Cory Clark strokes ball 3 of a intentional walk up the middle to allow the winning run to score from third base in extra innings, tuff way to lose one.

:thumb: And you were on some very good Post 76 teams during those days, there were some real baseball games with Post 76 and Morehead (coached by D. Hardin) backin the day. Also, Portsmouth, Oh. always had an excellent team and were coach by B. Newman.

The good 'ole days, of playing for Don Hardin. One of my favorite people, of all time.

Ceredo Kenova, wasn't too bad either. Can you remember Don Robinson?

Coach Lewis and staff, do an outstanding job with both age groups.

I certainly do remember Don Robinson and Hardin was a favorite unless you were playing against him :D :thumb: .

Don Hardin and B. Newman were two of the best baseball coaches I have ever known. Both were also great people. I always looked forward to playing Morehead and talking with coach Hardin.

I remember playing against D. Robinson. He had great stuff as a legion player and had a nice career with the big boys. He was also an excellent hitter. I worked with his dad for a few years at Owens Illinois Glass Factory. His dad was also a high school football official for many years.

Portsmouth had a great player in Dave Bennett. If not for a freak accident I believe he would have been playing in the Majors. Excellent hitter and 2nd baseman and he really understood the game. He was and still is a super nice guy along with his dad Gene.

Do you remember Gary Cisco and Billy Fouch. They were great players on the Morehead team? And a left handed pitcher with the last name Wells. I can't remember his first name.

Don Hardin was the finest baseball coach I've ever played for. The 3 best summers of my life growing up. He was however a better person, taught you much more than baseball. I still stop by his home in Morehead from time to time just to catch up. If there ever was a man who personified the statement "he's forgotten more baseball than I'll ever know" it's Don Hardin.

:thumb: I agree. I never met him but watching his teams play confirmed that statement.

Yes I do and wasn't Fouch, a 1st team All-SEC Outfielder, in the mid '70's.

Yes. While playing at UK. I remember Fouch as having one the strongest throwing arms of any CF I have watched. I always thought he and Cisco would play MLB. Cisco was a tremendous catcher and could flat out hit a baseball.

I agree and it would great to see, how many former Ashland and Morehead players, have gone on to College and the Pros.

Wasn't the Post 76, at one time in a city South of Ashland?
