First Day of Football Practice

How much do you want?

I don't know, I was thinking more like 2 months leading up to the beginning of the season, thats what we used to get for basketball, it was good for conditioning. And maybe 2-4 weeks in the spring, I don't know, just more than they currently get. Its tough on these smaller schools cause a month doesn't seem to be enough for em, they seem out of shape to me.

You currently get 10 days in the spring, and I think most coaches will tell you that between the passing leagues and that month of preseason practice is over they are glad for the season to start. I know when I played and coached fulltime a month of just getting to hit on each other was plenty.

I got a question. Why does the KHSAA only allow such a short time for HS football teams in KY to practice? They get 1 week in spring, not sure what good that is for and then they get to practice as a team for about a month before the season starts. I know that baseball and basketball teams are getting to play year round now. I understand that year round football would be bad on kids but I would think they would allow teams to practice a little longer than they currently are. Any ideas?

It is called burnout and wear and tear on the body.

I can't imagine practicing for 2 months prior to the first game. That's what off season conditioning and weights are for. The kids (and coaches) need some down time. And schools do have 2 weeks for spring practice now (10 practices with no doubles allowed).

I'm not 100% sure but I think that Highlands doesn't start football until next week. I think that they are only running and lifting this week. Maybe somebody in the loop can tell us.

The start of the season was moved back a week this year so some schools (Trinity included) are not starting practice until next week.

I did see that the Blueboy's from CovCath got the early start for the season. I guess you can only wear helmets and shoulderpads based on the picture in the paper this morning.

The spring practice is 10 days, or two 5 day weeks. This is a good opportunity to see how the team is going to stack up after the lose of the seniors, and also gives an opportunity to work with the underclassmen who will not get as many reps during the pre-season practice.

I love football just as much as the next guy, and some may disagree, but for right now I like the the set up of the practice schedule for football.

January to April - Weights and conditioning

April - 10 day spring practice

May -July - weight and conditioning, and 7 on 7.

June - various camps

July - dead period

July - Middle of July start practice, a good 5 or 6 weeks of practice before the season starts.

Aug. - season starts end of August.

Nov - Dec - the season ends

I think football has to be virtually year around if you want to succeed, looks like we are about there.

I did not know that it is 2 weeks instead of one, thanks for that info. I guess the real answer to my problem is that the kids need to be more motivated to strengthen and condition on their own time instead of as a team. I like the season the way it is, I would argue that pushing the schedule back a week isn't helping anything with the way its going to collide with basketball. I think that this year-round games is too much, like in basketball, you just simply can't do it with football, it would kill those kids bodies.

:thumb: Your right the players have to be motivated to work on their own, this will better prepare them for the season as well as prevent injury.

In all seriousness, football is a year around sport, if you are serious about football. You have spring practice, 7 on 7, camp, pre-season practice, and the season, and when these things are not going on weights and conditioning should be happening. The only exception is the dead period. Its just that the year around process is not always playing football like summer basketball.
