June 23, 200719 yr Fairfax County schools are undoubtadly going to experience a summer of love... I'm waiting to see the result of the human chain that some kids are likely to start upon entering the first day of school this year.
June 25, 200719 yr According to a Fox (yes I watch Fox) News report yesterday, this is not a new PC thing - the rule has been on the books for 15 years, and one family (out of 1000) has now gotten upset. The president of the PARENT/teacher Association (emphasis on Parent) was on defending the policy, which is the same in the elementary school and it is the same the kids have lived with for their school careers. As soon as one of you guys have an 11 year old 6th grade daughter who is the recipient of unwanted hugs by a 15 year 8th grade boy and is afraid to tell anyone b/c she wouldn't be cool come back and talk about this policy then. Have any of you guys been around 6th grade boys recently. they are always hitting and kicking and hugging and touching and being generally disruptive. the best rule is simply "no touching" that way you don't have to decide when it is okay and whether or not it is wanted or unwanted. Seems like a pretty reasonable rule to me.

As a teacher or administrator walking down the hallway, how do you discern whether the touching is wanted or unwanted? Boys are being "feminized" by telling them that when they walk down the hall as an 11-14 year old they are expected to keep their hands to themselves? WOW - how dare we? What mess are we in today? I would say that if we are in a mess it is because parents will go and fight against a rule that has been on the books for a decade instead of saying "son, you knew the rules and you broke it." We don't have respect for rules that are laid out for us and we don't have parents who support the school like they did in the 50s.

I believe that is incorrect. Kilmer Middle School is the only school in Fairfax County that has interpreted "improper touching" in such a way. The improper touching rule has always been interpretted to mean sexual touches (not unwanted) and was punished at the principal's discretion. There is more than one family upset. They've received numerous complaints from parents since they established the rule over a month ago. I was living there at the time they implemented this nonsense.
June 25, 200719 yr PDA...Public Display of Affection wasn't allowed when I was in school but not many students obeyed that rule as different adminstrative people has come and gone. I've seen guys have their hands on girls that would be not for public display even today. I don't see were High Fiving would be viewed as offensive though, hugs are not offensive only if it's unwanted by whoever is receiving a hug. I think this is too anual to put out as a rule.

They had a dedicated trail through the woods just for the cadets so they could express a little affection when their girlfriends came to visit. Anyway, I'm okay with a no PDA between opposite sexes in school. The rest is just silly and not well thought out.
