Interesting (Illegal) Trick Play

Featured Replies

I checked into the examples, JLMP, and all are legal. No fake tags, no verbal obstruction. All appear good.

As long as no one is yelling "foul" or "pop up" like in the original example, its all good.

So, no ARoding is allowed?

I'm all for it at the MLB level.

Why is it ok for one and not the other????

Good question. Really, it's a dirty play and shouldn't happen on any level.

NFHS doesn't allow it and I'm sure, the reason is for safety.

For example, if an infielder fakes fielding a ball or a tag, then the runner slides as a result, an injury could result. I'm presuming, it's a safety issue first and verbal obstruction/deception second.

How is the "ARod" play dirty? Dirty implies someone getting hurt.

Not necessarily...Is a spitball dirty??? Is a scuffed ball dirty??? Is corking a bat dirty???

That's cheating. Its not dirty.

And the difference is????

The difference is no one gets hurt as a result. A spit ball doesn't hurt me. Yelling "mine" doesn't hurt me unless you count your pride when you let it drop. No one gets hurt if Hopper slides the ball into Freel's glove as he's unconscious.

Dirty is a pitch to the head. Dirty is sliding with your spikes up. Dirty is going for the fielder's knees on a force play.

Surely, that makes sense.

Does to me and huge difference, between dirty and cheating.

Cheating, will get you suspended, fined or sitting down. Playing dirty, will get you hit between the shoulder blades, in the next AB.

Baseball, is a game of etiquette to me and I'm passionate, about it being played with respect and the right way. I don't tolerate someone, who resorts to cheating and loathe, a dirty play.

Of course it makes sense. However, because somone's definition makes sense does not make it right... and BTW, the sarcasm is not needed.

BTW, I'm glad my sons don't play for a coach that allows either "dirty or cheating" plays...No matter how they are defined by some, they are both classified as wrong in my book.

Very good statement and I've seen players, intentionally spike others, throw out arms and I saw this year, one player get hit 3 times in one game....I'll never condone throwing at a kids head, never but you come in spikes high, stomp the achilles at first or hit one of mine 3 times, you better be ready to get hit in the back or bottom.

The verbal distractions and intentional deception, is not needed.

There was no sarcasm in my post.

Obviously, its a subjective matter so there is no right or wrong.

Where does gamesmanship end and cheating begin? Rules do not cover every possible scenario. Many are open to interpretation.

IMO "cheating" is like "lying." Are you going to tell me that you do not believe in small white lies? Should I tell me wife "heck no your hair doesn't look good!" when she asks? Most men would say that's an acceptable form of lying. Cheating is the same. You cannot make a blanket statement about it.
