Interesting (Illegal) Trick Play

Featured Replies

NFHS doesn't allow it and I'm sure, the reason is for safety.

For example, if an infielder fakes fielding a ball or a tag, then the runner slides as a result, an injury could result. I'm presuming, it's a safety issue first and verbal obstruction/deception second.

Faking fielding is not illegal in FED -only faking a tag.

There was no sarcasm in my post.

Obviously, its a subjective matter so there is no right or wrong.

Where does gamesmanship end and cheating begin? Rules do not cover every possible scenario. Many are open to interpretation.

IMO "cheating" is like "lying." Are you going to tell me that you do not believe in small white lies? Should I tell me wife "heck no your hair doesn't look good!" when she asks? Most men would say that's an acceptable form of lying. Cheating is the same. You cannot make a blanket statement about it.

1. I disagree, there is a right and wrong.

2. "Acceptable form of lying"...True and funny:thumb:

1. An opinion cannot be right or wrong, correct? If we're not talking about an absolute then its all subjective.

2. True so you agree that there is baseball strategy or there are baseball actions that by definition fall under "cheating" but are OK, correct? If I knowingly slide my foot off of 2nd on a DP in order to speed up the play, I've cheated , right? I'm trying to fool the umpire and gain an advantage.

Its illegal to intentionally throw at a batter. Yet K3 subscribes to a theory, as do I, that sometimes a team has to be sent a message. Cheating by definition , right?

1. Just stating that you and I disagree.

2. I was laughing at your "wife's hair" statement and agreeing that that little white lie is always acceptable.

I'm all for it at the MLB level.

A couple of thoughts on this:

1. If you are making 250 million dollars and you have to yell "I got it"........you have some serious soul searching to do. What kind of example is that for younger kids?

2. I found it pretty amusing that when questioned about ARod's antics, none of his teammates would step up and back him or his actions. Tells me all I need to know......

3. This is exactly why America is falling "out of love" with baseball. Lie if you can, cheat if you must, but WIN at all costs. If your for this, why not corked bats? Steriods? Whatever it takes right? Baseball used to be about honor, and respecting the game. It seems that more and more today its just about how far we can stretch the rules to get that W.......

CSHS.....this wasn't necessarily directed at you, just at the general idea......

And if declared intentional by the umpire, the appropriate measures are taken. Same as a late hit on a QB in the NFL no? (Actually I'd say baseball's penalty is a little more severe)

As for sliding the foot off the bag.....again, not cheating IMO. No more than throwing to a spot just below the knees, that has been a strike all day, is. By this logic though, should NFL linemen all call themselves for penalties for holding? Some things follow with the integrity of the game, and some don't, and the people that know the difference have that little thing called character....

$$ are irrelevant. I think the fact that you mention that is indicative of why this is a story. If a Ryan Freel-type player does it, he would be congratulated for being scrappy and doing what it takes, etc.

Why are we trying to protect a MLB ball player who can't catch a popup because he got fooled? Are we going to ban an infielder deking a runner next? How is that different from ARod's play?

The lesson to kids should be "catch the darn ball if you're right under it."

No offense taken, OR. We just disagree.

What about the catcher framing the pitch, we teach them to do that.

Is that cheating?

You mean intentionally moving the pitch from where it really was to a better spot in order to fool the umpire?

I personally don't care who it was, its bush, and should be treated as such. I'm not trying to protect anyone, there is simply a certain way with which I was taught to play the game, and that is with class. If you have to do these types of things to win, well then IMO you have no class......

Someone related their thoughts like this: "It's like tricking your younger brother so you can beat him at a board game. Sure you won, but do you really feel good about it?"

Obviously I think that it goes without saying that there is a HUGE difference between some things that go on in the pros and those that SHOULD go on in HS games.

Bottom line for me is that winning just isn't the #1 priority in my book. Its about doing things the right way...... in fact I think that HS sports as a whole would wholly benefit from dropping the "win at all costs" mantra.

...which is why I said I'm ok with it at the MLB level.

You OK with nailing a batter?

You OK with nailing a batter?

Yep, but there is a proper way to do that too......

I see it as part of the (MLB)game, much in the same that holding is part of the NFL game. Some times you get called for it, sometimes you don't, but without it the game would be much different.

yes....so me a catcher at any level that doesn't do that.
