Witten seemed classy, but the young second basemen from Danville left a little to be desired.

 

In the bottom of the seventh, Danville trailing 3-2, Grimes (the second baseman) hit a weak popup to the right side of the infield. Frustrated, he tossed his helmet down prior to going into the dugout. The first base umpire told him to come back out and pick it up. Grimes apparently said something to the umpire, who immediately ejected him. Following the ejection, the young man came out of the dugout and flipped off the umpire, followed by a fan (possibly the father) coming down from the bleachers and yelled at the umpire, who proceeded to toss the fan. It was a pretty bad ending to a really good game.

Slight, but Mercer beat Danville with Witten pitching on May 9 by the same score. I thought Mercer looked better in every facet of the game today. It took a while to get rolling, but Mercer is playing really solid ball right now; they've won 18 of their last 22 with losses to Shelby County, Ballard, Lexington Christian and West Jessamine.

 

I think Danville might have been a bit overrated; they really fell off late in the season, finishing 12-10 after winning their first 14 games.

Yeah, it was unfortunate to see. I think he has battled some injuries all season, too. Everything just boiled over at a really bad time. You still have to maintain yourself with dignity and class; what was unfortunate is that Coach Morse really didn't seem to do anything about it.

Coach Morse is a very clam and collected guy anyway so I cant see him laying into a player. But Grimes is a senior and I guess he just made the last out of his career so I wouldnt say much to the player other than get in the dugout and you as a player dont argue with umpires. Now as for the parent that is flat out ridiculous. He should be thrown in jail or something. Something should be done to him because that is totally uncalled for.

We had a similar discussion last year about the Danville players' attitudes after ther semi-state loss to LexCath. There were many people defending the players last year after those events. I don't know if the players get it from the parents or the coaches, but it's a shame that Coach Morse allows this behavior on his team, period.

Morse does not allow or encourage this type of behavior. You think anyone would encourage players to act the way the Danville player did who was tossed yesterday?

 

Some say hats off to Witten for being a class act (which he is) but then you somehow put the blame on Morse for allowing the other? How could any coach step in and prevent what happened yesterday? Explain that to me please.

 

How about parents teaching their kids some dignity and respect. Lay the groundwork for teachers and coaches to build on. Don't expect them to do it all.

I still stand by what I said after last years Semi-State game. I know for a fact that a Senior playing in his last game of his career was tossed for doing absolutely nothing. The ump wanted to throw someone out for words that came from the dugout. He picked the first one he saw and got the wrong guy. I won't defend what took place after he was tossed, but I will defend the player to the end for being really upset over it.

You're right, parents should be held responsible for their childrens' actions.

 

I didn't say that Coach Morse encourages his players to act this way. In fact, Coach Morse has always been a class individual as far as I know. However, on the baseball field, the actions of players ultimately are a reflection on the coaching staff. And frankly, that's two straight years I've seen some embarrasing behavior come from a very good program in Danville. We can agree to disagree, I guess.

 

And to answer your question, every time a kid throws a helmet, argues with an official, gets an attitude, etc., etc., you take him out of the lineup.
