Theoldguy Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 Yes, you read the score correctly. In a game that most thought would be a low scoring game with Bleser going aginst Ryan, it turned into a slug fest. In the top of the CovCath first with two on Bleser took Ryan deep and high over the left field wall for a HR and CovCath led 3-0. Both team fought hard and it went back and forth, until CovCath took command of the game in the top half of the sixth. My star of the game was Coach Krumps. It was like a chess match between the two coaches tonight and whatever Krumps did worked correctly while the Cov Holy Cross just keep getting out moved. I will let other comment more on the game, as it was far too exciting to just have the little that I am posting tonight......
cshs81 Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 How did Luke Maile do today Clutch double scoring 2, I believe, that put them up after they were down 7-3.
Theoldguy Posted May 22, 2007 Author Posted May 22, 2007 How did Luke Maile do today Big double in the sixth (?) to knock in two runs. A few of us thought for sure even with the runners on 1st and 2nd that HC would walk him, but.... Luke came through big time. Once they walked him by just pointing to first base. In a reason why he is the best catcher in the ninth, he tagged out two runner at the plate tonight. One on a throw from Reis to Isler to Maile that nailed the runner at the plate in the first and the other on a pitch out called by I think Coach Krumps that the HC hitter was unable to touch and Maile nailed the runner as he tried to slide into home. Again the entire CovCath team including subs seemed to shine when they needed to. Young Shiver (sp?) who hit the Boone County pitcher hard on Wednesday had a huge at bat, as did Larkin when HC on a CovCath squeeze play tried to throw outside to Larkin but somehow Larkin got the bat on the ball and hit it scoring the runner, and even getting himself on base. Great game....... BTW; on the play by Larkin, it was one of the few times I have seen Coach Krumps actually smile....:thumb:
Theoldguy Posted May 22, 2007 Author Posted May 22, 2007 Bleser started for CovCath and only went two, followed by the House (Niehaus) who pitched one and got Holy Cross out on I believe 5 pitches. ICE (Isler) pitched two, and then Nutini pitched the sixth and seventh to close out HC. The best part about the pitchers for CovCath, is all, if I understand the HS rules correctly, can pitch Wednesday evening.....
cshs81 Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 I didn't get a good view of the play but a key play was the safe call at 2nd on the attempted double play. It allowed CCH to get Maile up a few batters later and he hit a gapper deep to left center.

Much to far for me to say safe or out, but with the game having three umpires, the third umpire was right on top of the play. Now did he make the correct call, don't know, but he was in the correct position to make the call, and not much more can you ask of the men in blue....
Butterfingers Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 Hey old guy I have seen Him for over 20 years and have never seen him smile during a game.
Theoldguy Posted May 22, 2007 Author Posted May 22, 2007 Hey old guy I have seen Him for over 20 years and have never seen him smile during a game. And that is why I made a note of it, because it is the first time that I have seen him smile too. Larkin, made a huge play on getting his bat on that ball and drive in that important run....

cshs81 Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 Wish I could have seen it. Must have been a great one It actually started out foul then rolled back into fair territory.
2Short Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 fwiw...the catcher calls the entire game....Luke stole a sign and took a chance on the pitch out....the play at second was not even close looking down the line from first to second...he wasn't close to second...glad he made the call...it was the right call...
cshs81 Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 fwiw...the catcher calls the entire game....Luke stole a sign and took a chance on the pitch out....... Good info. Good read by Luke. Abeling is the best bunter I've seen this year so if it was going to happen, its not a surprise that it was with him batting.

Glad to hear that. A lot of Coaches call the game for the catchers, but glad to hear that Krumps trust Luke enough to let him do it... Great and gusty call by Luke and it is the second time that he has done it this year....
2Short Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 a couple of additional thoughts: Bleser showed great composure and senior leadership in not his greatest night on the mound...he didn't get a lot of help, but he stayed cool and gave the sophs some great confidence....Shover will be a stud....clutch pinch hit rbi single...Darner will be a problem for those who walk to get to him! Stein's catch in left was also a huge play in terms of guts and leadership...somebody needed to make a play at that time and he stepped up...Isle with a big basehit...the squeeze was beautiful! Just a great win when all the chips didn't always fall our way...
