On a final note; It is indeed a shame that a team with the quality of players that Cov Holy Cross has on it's team, that they find themselves left out of the Regional play again. Cov Holy Cross is indeed an outstanding team, and it is just a shame that they are in the same district with two other outstanding teams CovCath and Beechwood.

Hold your heads up Indians, you played your best. Seniors good luck to you wherever you wind up this fall....

As I posted in a different thread, this had to be one of the toughest match-up in the Commonwealth for a first round game.....

Krumps called a great game and his players responded. This is a great mix of seniors and under classmen that could go farther them most think.

Holy Cross seniors - you are a great group of ball players and it has been an honor to have played aganist you and with you on summer teams since the

5th grade. Good Luck

..Shover will be a stud....clutch pinch hit rbi single..

Who did he pinch hit for? And IMO way too long for him not to be Varsity. I wonder why now?

Who did he pinch hit for? And IMO way too long in the making!!!

I believe he hit for Holochor the young CovCath SS....and indeed he (Shover) came up huge..... The kid can indeed hit.....

Why now?....if for no other reason I would think how he hit the ball against Boone County and their best pitcher Wednesday. He has been hitting the ball hard on the JV level.....at least in the games that I have seen....

Did Shover take over for Holecher at short?

No, Holochor stayed in at SS and if I remember correctly even batted again for himself later in the game.

Interesting. I guess it is all about timing and the situation. Good coaches know when to make the changes

Great and gusty call by Luke and it is the second time that he has done it this year....

Good info. Good read by Luke.

From what I hear, it was Tyler Holocher who made the initial call. Credits the sign-stealing ability to his father.

Also, in two innings, Nutini was incredible tonight. He will be one of the best pitchers in the 9th for the next two years to come, if he isn't already.

He said/she said. Whatever! Who will pitch for CCH next game?

My guess, and remember it is only a guess, but.....

Bleser, Niehaus, Isler and Nutini and why not, none pitched more than 2 innings on Monday against Cov Holy Cross.

In all the excitement of yesterday game, I forget to mention that young Maile just tied the CovCath RBI record of Matt Berger of 61 RBI's that Berger established in 1992. Congrats Luke.....

From the Cincy Enquirer:

CovCath needs whole arsenal

35th District: Covington Catholic 12, Holy Cross 8

For most of Northern Kentucky's top baseball teams, the beginning of district play comes after a first-round bye. And usually, it comes against an overmatched team that is little more than a speedbump on the way to the district final and an automatic bid to the regional tournament.

Survive, and leave plenty in the tank for a postseason run.

But for Covington Catholic, a member of the highly competitive four-team 35th District, Monday's district opener was a grind-it-out, show-all-your-cards, win-or-go-home affair.

From Ernst's blog:

Deja-vu ...

Here's what I posted on this blog a year ago this week:

A star is born ...

Wanna know what was going through my mind today when Covington Catholic freshman catcher Luke Maile hit a 375-foot opposite field bomb at Meinken Field to seal up the Colonels' 12-8 victory in the 35th District semifinal game against Holy Cross?

Not, "Wow, that ball was hit hard."

Not, "Wow, this game's over."

Not even, "Wow, I'm glad my car's not parked out there."

I thought, "Great, I'm going to have to interview a freshman." Sadly, that's how the mind of a sportswriter works.

Not that I have anything against 15-year-old males. Heck, I used to be one. I remember what it was like. I couldn't converse my way out of a wet paper bag.

But at 15, I was no Luke Maile. I'm not even now. Not only is Maile one of the best young ballplayers I've seen in a long time. He's also one of the most eloquent. He's one of those great-handshake-look-you-in-the-eyes kind of kids. He was a better quote than most coaches. He spoke about the homer, the team, his coach, the seniors. I think he even quoted Thoreau.

OK, maybe not. But he's a very impressive kid. And we'll be hearing plenty from him over the next few years.

About the only thing different tonight was the score, but not by much. CovCath just beat Holy Cross 12-8 in the 35th District opener at Meinken. Instead of a towering homer, Maile drove in a pair of runs to tie the school's single-season RBI record (61) and called for a pitchout that foiled a Holy Cross squeeze play that would have put the Indians ahead.

And yes, the now-sophomore Maile was just as eloquent afterward.

"It was my call, but it was great scouting by our coaches," Maile said of the pitchout. "They talked to me before the game and they said Holy Cross was a team that liked to squeeze with one strike. It might have been my call, but I was definitely well prepared by our coaches."

Next time, I'm checking his ID.

That's a good group of young players Bill Krumpelbeck has at CovCath. When the Indians tried to pitch around Maile tonight, fellow sophomore Ryan Darner made them pay. They were two of five sophomores to see action for the Colonels tonight.

"I've never had anything like it," Krumpelbeck said. "They play like seniors. It's going to be fun the next couple years."

I was at this game and it was a great game to watch! After seeing this game which had arguably 2 of the top 3 teams in the region this year playing, I stand by my belief that the 9th region is definitely down this year when it comes to having a great team. Both of those teams on the field were very good teams, but nowhere near as good IMO as some of the other top teams in years past. I hope I am wrong but I dont see us doing much down state this year....
