newarkcatholicfan Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 the high fuel prices? The big wig oil people basically run so many of the politicians with the money they contribute to them so would it be in their best interest not to push to hard to find a fix for the high fuel prices?
oldrambler Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 the high fuel prices? The big wig oil people basically run so many of the politicians with the money they contribute to them so would it be in their best interest not to push to hard to find a fix for the high fuel prices? The "regular Joe" public certainly wants a solution to it and the price gouging (yes, I said it bc that is excatly what is happening :irked: ) but the CEO's of all the Oil Companies couldn't care less= record proffits.........buy a few more politicians (Republican and Democrat )..............blame ALL on the Arabs/Iraq and then laugh all the way to the bank. These people are ALL taking all of us to the cleaners.
HHSDad Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 the high fuel prices? The big wig oil people basically run so many of the politicians with the money they contribute to them so would it be in their best interest not to push to hard to find a fix for the high fuel prices? Unbelievable! Time to get your facts straight. Political contributions by sector in 2004: Agribusiness $52,969,919 Communications/Electronics $102,389,643 Construction $72,013,481 Defense $16,135,340 Energy & Natural Resources (includes oil) $52,752,826 (Oil and gas make up $25 million of this) Finance/Insurance/Real Estate $338,895,341 Health $123,936,595 Ideology/Single-Issue $180,124,366 Labor $61,507,730 Lawyers & Lobbyists $211,894,733 Misc Business $209,076,878 Retired $184,038,544 Education $36,941,036 Transportation $51,625,966 So just looking at industry sectors, oil doesn't even come close to being the leader of political clout.
newarkcatholicfan Posted May 19, 2007 Author Posted May 19, 2007 That's a lot of Jack that the oil people give just like I stated thank you very much.
HHSDad Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 That's a lot of Jack that the oil people give just like I stated thank you very much. Lawyers give more than 7 times what oil and gas gives. 70% of the lawyer money goes to Democrats.
newarkcatholicfan Posted May 19, 2007 Author Posted May 19, 2007 I never said they gave the most I said they give a lot. The bottom line is no solution is in site and the oil big wigs are making record profits and at the top of the leader board is the oilman who is running the country.

My issue with your statement and what so many other people believe is that oil controls the government and its just not true. Its silly to believe that the government wants high oil prices when it so negatively effects the budget. It increases the cost of government in almost every area, especially in defense, local and state governments.
newarkcatholicfan Posted May 19, 2007 Author Posted May 19, 2007 If they really wanted things to be different, they would be. We have too much technology at our disposal to make a change if one was wanted by the powers that are.
Hearsay Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 Lawyers give more than 7 times what oil and gas gives. 70% of the lawyer money goes to Democrats. And look what its gotten us . . . tort reform. Why? Because insurance companies pay a king's ransom to have politicians bought.
scooterbob Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 Although I would be the first to agree that many of our tort lawyers are parasites, it should be acknowledged that juries are often made up of fools. Some thieves steal with guns and many more do so with prescription pads and white coats. However, the top of the line is reserved for those who file class action law suits.
HHSDad Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 And look what its gotten us . . . tort reform. Why? Because insurance companies pay a king's ransom to have politicians bought. Lawyers gave 5 times more than the insurance companies gave.
Jim Schue Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 My issue with your statement and what so many other people believe is that oil controls the government and its just not true. Its silly to believe that the government wants high oil prices when it so negatively effects the budget. It increases the cost of government in almost every area, especially in defense, local and state governments. They may not "control" it, per se. But with an oil man and a defense contractor as Prez and Veep — both with a history of cronyism they openly flaunt — it seems obvious to me that if those industries get an itch, they get scratched promptly.
Hearsay Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 Lawyers gave 5 times more than the insurance companies gave. Maybe we ought to break down your sectors, because your list had the insurance and real estate folks at $339M and the lawyers and lobbyists at $212M.
Habib Posted May 20, 2007 Posted May 20, 2007 To steal an idea from the Robin Williams flick, politicians should have to wear sponsor patches on their suits like NASCAR drivers, so we know who owns them.
HHSDad Posted May 21, 2007 Posted May 21, 2007 Maybe we ought to break down your sectors, because your list had the insurance and real estate folks at $339M and the lawyers and lobbyists at $212M. Sure, here's the numbers for 2006 in millions for those sectors. Oil & Gas $19.1 Lawyers & Law firms $123.6 70% Dem Lobbyists $27.6 57% GOP Insurance $30.8 64% GOP Commercial Banks $25.3 61% GOP Accountants $10.6 64% GOP Real Estate $73.8 55% GOP Securities & Investment $64.9 53% Dem
