They will play slow tempo, and it should be interesting first time he plays his cross town rival and has his PG hold it on his hip til the "D" comes out of zone even if it means the entire quarter which I have seen him do on more than one occasion at Graves during a big game. Exciting up & down...NO! He will win games though!!!

As long as he is winning at PCC the fans will not care how slow he plays.

How in the heck did he coach both the girls/boys for three seasons at Graves?

Actually, he did it for two years. He had great coaching staffs on both teams, which helped immensely. One or two assistants also did double duty.

I am not too sure Hatcher has ever coached any other tempo than deliberate. His teams usually average in the high 40s or 50s per game.

Not quite true. Most of his Marshall County teams played a decent tempo, and his first couple of Graves County teams did the same thing. His teams always had the ability to slow it down, but to the best of my memory, Graves only started to slow it down dramatically in the late 90s.

One of the reasons Hatch played that style was to win. I believe that is his job the last time I checked, He did whatever it took to win at Graves and will have to do the same thing at Perry Central, they can not press, shoot 3's etc, he would do a lot more with his teams if they could. Fun basketball teams to watch or teams that win? At the state tourney a couple years ago he beat South Laurel and if it would have been fun to watch they would have lost. The next game they lost to J-town because they could not slow it down, he probably should have pressed and shot 3's and lost by 30, Ha!

In his press conference he said "if he had the talent, he would run, press, and run some more", he said "if you don't run in the mountains, you can't win", so we will have to wait and see if he has the talent to play this style or if he will have to go back to stall ball to get the wins! Only time will tell. Good luck to him and to the Commodores this summer and next season.

In the 95-96 season i think it was, we (Malone, Fl.) played Graves in the Kindgom tourney in Ocala and he had a great 3 point shooting team and they ran and pressed. At one point in the game 7 straight trips 3 pointers were made. Unfortunately they started that streak and ended it and ended up beating us by 6. He might have won the sweet sixteen that year if his very good post player (can't remember his name) hadn't have blown his knee out in January. Coach Hatcher is more than capable of coaching any style, but is going to do what any great coach does, and that is give his team the very best chance to win. Good luck Coach Hatcher.

You are absolutely right! It was the 93-94 team. My memory is good, it is just short in my older age LOL. Yes Burnette was the kid who got hurt. He was a beast in the post at 6-4. I think they would have had a legitimate shot at winning it all had he not have gotten hurt. He was one of their leading scorers if not their leading scorer, and certainly was their leading rebounder at the time that he got hurt. Thanks for correcting me.

Will be interesting down here on the far western part of the state to see if this holds true and if he is interested as he stated all along that the reason he was leaving Graves County for PCC is to be close to his family. If he did entertain UHA that would be a very interesting combo as Hatcher does get the best out of his players...which may not bode well for Hopson as either fast or slow style of play...Hatcher puts a great deal of emphasis on the defensive end of play.

 

On a side note...Hatcher saw the writing on the wall here at Graves County...not much depth or talent coming back next season for the Eagles...that and the fan base was growing tired of his slow-down style of play
