Has been a while since we have had an update on this thread. How is everyone doing fishing? Anyone going? This time of year is super.

 

I talked to a friend last night that gave a report on the Ohio River / Greenup Pool. I was told that the Largemouth were at the mouths of the creeks & tributaries and were slamming crank baits. 25 keepers along with a bonus striper around 15-20lb. were caught.

 

Also, below the Greenup dam they have been catching Stripers.

 

I know that it is hunting seasons but guys and gals it is time to fish, it is ON!! Our local lakes and reseviors should be picking up as well, Musky fishing on Cave Run is very good in the fall.

I hit the tailwaters out at Grayson Lake a couple of weeks ago. The flow was pretty low and the fishing was pretty slow. I usually get a few crappie out of there and maybe a couple of stripers. All I could manage was a small cat and a couple of decent bluegills.

This weekend willbe grat for fishing, Warm sunny days and cool nights. Just right for the fish.

Hit Grayson lake tailwaters again today. I like to fish there because it usually produces good crappie fishing. But not today. They're drawing down the lake and the water was high and swift.

I decided to try the Ohio Rver below Greenup dam. I haven't fished there in YEARS. Caught several stripers in the 8-10 inch range. Also several sauger of the same size plus one 16 incher. I think I'll try there again next week.

I got a report on the Ohio River/Greenup Pool and it was that last week fish (Bass and Sauger and some Striper)) were still being caught at the mouths of creeks and Sauger, Hybrids/Stripers were being caught below the Greenup dam.

1st of all, Welcome to BGP reflaine :thumb:. Below the Greenup Dam now is an excellent time for Sauger, Hybrid and Striper are also caught.

For the Sauger I always used around a 6 - 6.5 ft. spinning rod and reel spooled aorund 8- 10lb. test line and for the Striper - Hybrid fishing a Heavy action "flipping stick" type rod is used with casting reels and around 17-20lb. line. Water color on the river usually is murky enough so the line being a clear line doesn't really matter imo.

For the sauger, if you happen to be in a boat they do very good fishing the tip of the lock wall with spoons and Siver Buddy type lures.

Be very careful fishing around dams - they can be very dangerous with the turbulent water and all. Areas are marked as far as "no boats" beyond certain points and areas.

Should you be fishing from the bank for sauger I like to just cast a jig & grub in White or Chart, sometimes and orange grub works well depending on water color. I fish them on the spinning outfit, using a 1/8 to 1/4 oz. jig head letting the bait go to the bottom then fish it using a lift/drop or just a sloooooow , steady "do nothing" retrieve stopping from time to time letting the bait hit the bottom. Take plenty of jig heads/grubs bc you are going to lose some baits.

 

For the hybrids and stripers I have heard that they are having sucsess using Flippin' Stiks and casting Large Hair jigs in a wht./wht.-red pattern making long cast and working the bait back using a pumping retrive. Some were also having sucsess "carolina rigging" a shallow running crank bait in a chrome or shad color and dragging the rig acrosss the bottom type retrieve.

 

Just about anything you want to use - something will hit it below a dam.

 

Good Luck, below dams always provides some good fishing, it is like a box of chocolates.....you never know what you may catch . Sauger, Walleye, white bass, hybrid, striper, catfish, drum largemouth, crappie some smallmouth .........just about anything that swims can be caught at times. I love the sauger bc of the fine eating fish that they are.

thanks for the info, imight have to get up that way this week, how hard is it to get to the tailwaters, is fishing better on the ohio or kentucky side.

They fish both sides and a Ky. Licsense will also do you o.k. on both sides, if a person goes into an Ohio Creek/tributary off of the river then an Ohio non resident Licsense is required. Same goes for an Ohio angler going up into a Ky. tributary/creek off of the river. A person can fish either bank on the main stem of the River with either licsense due to an agreement between the two states. It is probably easier to get to the bank from the Ohio side. The Ky. side can be productive but acsess down on that side was not as easy. The Ohio side has steps and a concrete pier/walkway just below the dam and you can get to a number of spots on down either bank once down there. The walk can be a bit hard though. By the way, about the Musky fishing I have only caught musky when I was bass fishing at Cave Run. They do catch a lot of Muskie this time of the year I believe at Cave Run. I just have never gotten into fishing them (Musky) exclusively. Hopefully others on here can help you more on the Musky side of things.

Musky fishing is about the only fishing we do, take a trip or to to erie, but about gave up bass fishing to go after the toothy critters. Cave Run has probably slowed. Not much of a winter fishing. We fish kinney all winter as long as the water stays soft. Been many days in the creek to see 15 plus musky this time of year.

I was below the dam a couple of weeks ago and was watching a guy fish. He was using a casting net to catch small herring and was using them for bait. He had a basket full of sauger he had caught. I bought a net and am going to try that as soon as we get some decent weather. I did catch 1 16 incher and a few really small ones.

Have you used a casting net before? There's definitely a knack to it. Good Luck!:thumb:
