OK cshs81, I was wrong. I got a straight answer from someone that knows everything about anything. The key to all this is whether or not the official scorer charges an error to the catcher. If it is scored E-2, then the runs are unearned. If the scorer feels it is a tough catch meaning the wind blowing hard and the catcher had to dive for the catch and no error charged, then the runs would be earned. This is as long as there are two outs, if less than that then the runs would be earned in this situation.

Ok, for all you baseball experts. I have spoken to two major league scouts, not that they know as much as us BGP posters but here is what they said. They agreed w/me. If all three baserunners reached on a hit, walk or what have ya and then reach home by a safe hit(no matter if FOUL ball was muffed) the runs are considered earned. However, they also felt like the batter who hit the triple and then scored could possibly be unearned due to the muffed foul ball. The main thing was that the muffed ball was FOUL, no error charged to the catcher, therefore, that makes the runs earned.

 

Read the above site I posted, if you read it, this all makes sense today. I will see some more so-called experts later and ask for their opinions also.

Scouts are really good at detecting pitches, who can throw a change up, who can field. They don't know stats. I talked to someone today who helped write the NFHS stats manual (yes there is a publication), and its the same at all levels. Like cshs tried to tell us all, E-2, everything that happened after the third out should have been made is unearned.
