Wanted for UK's next coach: Perfection required

Featured Replies

At the University of Kentucky, excellence is not the standard for a men's basketball coach.

That's not nearly enough performance.

Perfection is closer to the mark.

It has long been reputed that Barnhart is enamored with Notre Dame Coach Mike Brey. However, surely Barnhart wouldn't bring to Kentucky a Duke guy (Brey is out of the Krzyzewski coaching tree) who has never come close to a Final Four.

I fear the treatment given to Coach Smith will end up hurting UK in recruiting. Some unscrupulous recruiters could try and paint UK as racists and build upon the reputation it obtained through the Texas Western game and the supposed Adoph Rupp racist attitudes.

Race has been an issue ever since Orlando "Tubby" Smith's name surfaced as a candidate to take the helm as head coach of the University of Kentucky's men's basketball program.

The Rev. Louis Coleman, head of the Louisville-based Justice Resource Center, said "UK doesn't have the greatest practices in the world when it comes to true diversity." Coleman said his group will meet with the UK administration following Smith's departure.

Smith's resignation "is a reflection on the fans, more so than it is on the administration," Coleman said. "You have some fans that have the wrong motives. They weren't booing (because of) a win or lose situation, but because of a human being's color. Whoever they get, they won't get a better coach than Tubby Smith."

"The racial element was there, but it wasn't with the administration. There are some racist fans, but they would have no more impact on it than any other person," said S.T. Roach, famed coach of Dunbar High School's segregated basketball teams. "I think it's wins and losses really, that's my opinion."

yeah.. there's an unbiased opinion for you.

How many AA coaches are there in D1 college basketball? the SEC? How many when Tubby was hired?

If UK fans are so racist, why is Dwight Perry the bench player that everyone chants for? If the fans are so racist, they'd be chanting for Coury instead.

To clear up and you don't misunderstand my post.

I have long said that the atmosphere around UK had become so poisoned that it was time for Tubby to move on.

In what I think doesn't stand in contrast to that position at all, is that the next coach will have had LESS SUCCESS in the past 10 years than Tubby had.

Unless Coach K, Jim Calhoun, Tom Izzo, or Roy Williams takes the job, the next coach will not have had the same amount of success in the last 10 years that Tubby has had at UK the last 10 years.

Louis Coleman is nothing but a lazy, shady, and angry man. All he does is run his mouth...he does nothing but create racial issues...

Surprised his little pal "Christopher2X (and yes that is really what that guy goes by) hasn't chimed in on this!

It all come back to $$$$$$

Tubby was given 20 MIL over 10 years. That gives UK fans a right to demand perfection. IMO

For those that think coaches will be beating down the doors to come to UK, from this first article......

Rick Barnes has taken a football school -- Texas -- to a Final Four (2003) and an Elite Eight (2006) in the past five years. He is a big-time recruiter (see Durant, Kevin). He has a prickly personality, but the fact is, it seems to take a certain level of churlishness to succeed as UK coach.

Barnes said last week he wouldn't be interested in the Kentucky job

Doug Gottlieb nailed it on ESPN RADIO this morning. He said Tubby was an A- coach at an A school. Great guy but there is no way a Memphis should bring in better talent than a UK. He said Tubby had 10yrs. not 2 or 3 to get some things done. And he knew the situation when he took the job. He talked how top recuiters dont leave it in the hands of assistants to get true blue chippers, the head guy has to be in those living rooms.

You are really going out on a limb there arent you? The coach wont have as much success and can thank Tubby for that. Think about the program when Tubby came in and think about it now when a new coach comes in. Theres a huge HUGE difference, and I think your missing that part of the equation.

I don't care much for Gottlieb but he is 100% right. I have been saying this for months. Tubby knew what the Expectations were when he took over.

Reread the line that you bolded.

The coach will not have had success in the LAST 10 YEARS that Tubby has had in the LAST 10 YEARS.

Never said anything in that post about the future.

Although in another post, I said Minnesota makes the Elite 8 before UK.:sssh: ;)

Many of the former greats theorized that Smith was either forced out by the administration or that he had finally buckled under constant scrutiny and pressure.

"I'm very, very angry right now," Mills said. "Kentucky fans would say he was a good coach, but not a Kentucky-caliber coach and that's just asinine.

"They chased away a guy that gave them -- whether they knew it or not -- what they wanted."

"A lot of us feel as though he's been forced out, pressured out," former UK All-American Sam Bowie said. "I would be extremely ashamed of my university if that was the case. I'd be embarrassed, completely embarrassed."

Bowie admits he's biased. Smith and his wife, Donna, are close family friends.

Bowie hadn't spoken with Smith yesterday but said he hoped UK officials didn't bow to pressure from a zealous fan base.
