Don't know if I was watching a basketball game or a football game. Very physical. Back and forth game throughout second half. HHS had shot to take the lead but missed with 6 seconds left, fouled NCC. Made both foul shots with 4.8 sec left. Simpson recived inbounds pass around three point line in backcourt and took it to the hole and made the layup as time ran out. Must have thought they were down 2......

Well a much better performance by the Bluebirds than the Dayton game. Good luck to both at the regional draw tomorrow!

Not a very heady play by Simpson. 4.8 sec is a ton of time, did the Birds have a timeout left? If so, shouldnt you get it to halfcourt, call a TO and set up a play? Lets hear more on this game.

Highlands dominated the begining and the end of the first quarter. Jumped out to a 10-4 lead with Simpson scoring most of the points. NCC made a nice run to finally get a 15-14 lead but missed numerous foul shots including six in a row at one point. Highlands closed out the quarter well and had a 17-14 lead just missing a shot at the end of the quarter.

 

Second quarter saw things tighten up but NCC's Kiernan sat the last 1:30 with two fouls and Highlands took advantage to grab a 27-21 lead at the break.

 

NewCath dominated after the break and ran off 13 straight points to lead 34-27. Had every opportunity to break the game open with two minutes left but played kind of stupid and Highlands battled back by running off 8 straight points of their own.

 

Fourth quarter was pretty back and forth or tied. NCC once again missed a bunch of foul shots and couldn't extend the lead. Finally made one to go up 44-43. Highlands had a shot but missed and knocked it out of bounds with 6 seconds left. NewCath finally got it in and was fouled with 4.9 seconds left. Huesman made both to put the Breds up 46-43. Highlands then nearly threw it away but got it to Simpson at half court who then weaved through traffic, drove in for some reason and layed the ball in with no time left.

 

Not a well officiated game and IMO it once again comes down to a three man crew versus two man in nearly every other game. Lots of confusion on calls as one ref waits for the other to call something, no signal on three pointers, no one doing the five second count, ref the greatest distance away making a call instead of the two closest to the play. I've yet to see a two-man crew this year be as bad as a three-man crew.

I think they had a timeout left but after Simpson caught the ball he was in enough open space where Willie probably thought that he could get a decent shot off from three. One play didn't lose this game so I don't want to get wrapped up about one play. I haven't been to many boys games lately but there has to be better officals than the ones they had tonight. They were bad both ways. Also the amount of talking between players and officals after fouls and nonfouls was a little excessive IMO.

ONe play can make or break a game and if you shoot a layup down 3 that is a pretty substantial play.

 

Simpson will need to make headier plays, in the SK game they were up 8 or 10 in the 4th qtr and he was trying to dribble between 3 people for layups. The game is more than physical ability, its about situations. He is their bread and butter and their best player and has done quite well since coming back from injury but you have to be in the game at all times.

 

The jawing is probably just a lot of neighborhood kids acting like they were playing ball at the ARmory or something. I wasnt there but just a guess.

Sounds like the refs were less than decent. It seems like this is a lost art. I remember when I played, we had guys like Ernie Ligget, Tom Freppon Sr., Tom Hummel, Dave Schabel and I dont remember it being that bad.

Me too. I would have never mouthed off and gestured the way the players did tonight, Hummel would have T'd up half the players tonight. My favorite was Ernie, he would carry on a conversation with you through out the game.

High schools need to lean towards what the NBA is doing this year. You can still talk to a ref after a play, but you can't gesture, shake your head, or complain right after the play.

 

Of course half the time tonight the players had to wait for the call because you never knew what was coming. The first foul on Kiernan he stripped the ball and took five dribbles before the ref away from the play decided it was a foul. You could hold, hand-check, and push out front but so much as try to put in an offensive rebound and it was an offsensive foul.

I loved the way Ernie called Traveling when you would force it on the offensive player. Used to sweat a ton also.

I'm going to guess you're painting a much worse picture than it was. I kind of doubt everyone was chewing on refs all night and the refs were conferring and looking confused all night.
