Expectations of UK Men's Basketball Team

Featured Replies

I have been accused by a TBer of having low expectations for the UK basketball team. I have learned to except losing. I don't think that is accurate.

I have accused TBers of having unrealistic expectations and expecting 2 national titles in 3 years all the time. Maybe that is not accurate.

So for the sake of clarification, what are your expectations as a UK fan.

Here are mine:

24-25 wins every year.

Compete for the SEC regular season and tournament title, winning one or the other every year. I would accept winning one or the other 4 out of 5 years.

Minimum, Sweet 16 appearance every year in the NCAA tournament.

Elite 8 appearance every 2-4 years.

Final 4 appearance every 4-6 years.

National Title once every 10 years.

Don't want to see the players or coaches in the sports section for behavior issues that run them afoul of the law. 1 such story in a 5 year period would be acceptable as I know sometimes it happens with college-aged students.

So Tubby isn't living up to your expectations is what you're trying to tell us. ;)

I'd accept this too and anyone who wouldn't would definatly have expectations noone could reach.

I don't like hearing that its great that we reached a 20 win season.

It is good and acceptable here and there...but should NEVER, NEVER be the norm or a congratulatory achievement. :fight:

The Tournies should be a chance for us to push towards 30 wins, not barely break 20.

Winning the title every decade is ROUGH.

We should be in the Sweet 16 MOST years, unless injuries or a tough 2nd round team like UCONN last year.

My expectations would be this:

1) 20 plus wins every year, more 25 win seasons than not...

2) Consistent top 3 seed, can accept a lower seed 3 of 10 years...

3) sweet 16 appearance at least every other year...

4) elite 8 appearance every 3 or 4 years...

5) Final 4 appearance every 6-8 years...

6) SEC reg season champs at least every 3rd year...

7) SEC tourney champs at least every 3rd year...

You obviously haven't read the Billy D thread where I had listed the career highlights of both Tubby and Billy D.

Both have averaged at the 25 win mark with Tubby being at that mark much more than he has not and averaging LESS losses per year than Billy D.

Billy HAS NOT lived up to my expectations of a Sweet 16 every year. ONLY 3 times in his 10+ years at Florida has he made it to the Sweet 16. More often he loses in the first or second round.

While Tubby has not made it every year, I believe it was 3 years he lost in the round of 32 and never in the first round. So in 10 years he has made it there in 7. That is not bad.

He has won a national title in the last 10 years, so yes he has lived up to my expectations.

He has been to the Elite 8 twice in the past 5 years. So yes there.

Final 4 he has not. But save for a Double OT loss and a bum ankle to Keith Bogans and he might have met this expectation too. But alas, he did not.

I think I have high expectations as there are only a HANDFUL of coaches in the nation (and Billy D, based upon his results with HIS players that HE recruited, would NOT BE ONE) that could meet my expectations.

Tubby comes VERY CLOSE only truly failing in the Final 4 in the past 6 years.

For UK, I think every other year is too low of an expectation. I could consider 2 out of 3 but 50% of the time losing in the first weekend, I don't think is acceptable for UK.

So is 25 a good number as I suggested. And I meant that number as a end of the regular season number, not a after the tournament number. I agree with what I bolded from your post.

Let me rephrase mine, how about 1 in the next 10 years?

I have been accused by a TBer of having low expectations for the UK basketball team. I have learned to except losing. I don't think that is accurate.

I think that's very close, if not dead on, to what my expecations are...I haven't put the thought into it, but if I did, I'm pretty sure it would be close to what you have, and any differences I might have would be minimal. Nice job.

One thing I would add, which probably could be implied from your post, is that I would like to have a team that is a realistic contender to win the title almost every year. That doesn't mean they have to be a front-runner, but at least in the discussion on a consistent basis (see Duke). I want a team that people don't want to play. Again, nice job.

YES, people recently in the Tubby era have lost the intimidation factor that Kentucky use to hold over people. Walking into a gym and the other team thinking , "Hey, thats KEntucky and if we play our best and they play their best then we still loose." This is the traditional Kentucky team, and even on a down year pulls something out because WE ARE KENTUCKY and that is what we do no matter who is facing us or the ostacles we must over come. This is Kentucky because history repeats itself and we have been sucessful and we will be back one day, this is when we will be KENTUCKy again.

I think College Basketball, with the rise of the mid major programs, has lost intimidation as a factor in 95% of all games, especially in conference games. I think that Duke, North Carolina, and UCLA along with UK do not have the same intimidation factor they had over teams as short a time as say 5-10 years ago. Do I want it back, yes, but I don't see it happening. I think the loss of intimidation factor goes hand in hand with a large group of top flight players going to schools like Texas, and Ohio State. 10 years ago, all those players that didn't go pro went to the Duke, and UNC's. Now the players that are only in the college game for a year before they jump to the NBA, don't want to be on a team where they won't be the guy(execption Marvin Williams) North Carolina lost 20 games a few years ago, Kentucky struggles this year and last hurt the ability to intimidate. Maryland(even though they won a championship recently) is not seen as a strong tradional power, defeated Duke at Cameron last night. Florida State is another team that has gone into a place like Cameron and won. Look at the teams that have the longest home win streaks in the country. It was Gonzaga and Air Force- who both just lost at home recently.

I guess my main point is that this lack of intimidation is not just happening at UK, but I agree with you that we want it back.

^It's not so much intimidation that I care about. I agree that teams aren't intimidated much anymore. I want the swagger and confidence back on our side. I want UK's teams to play like they are the best team on the court and the opponent can't hang with them for a full 40 minutes. I want to see a team that plays like they know they're going to win. If we can get that attitude and style back, it would be far more important than an intimidation factor...of course, the two probably go hand in hand.

Exactly what I would like to see. Play with some swagger and confidence.

Walk on the floor knowing you are going to win and play like it.

Don't play scared and don't play afraid to make a mistake. Let it all hang out! I could live with things if they played like this every night.

That's how I coach now and thats how I played the game back in the day.
