Can't believe after CCH won the state championship game that they'd be crying about who made the team in an All-Star game that doesn't mean or count for anything. Be grateful you guys got the trophy that matters. In the grand scheme of things, we'd happily trade all of our spots on an All-star team for that state trophy you got.

Not sour grapes, but a valid argument. Everyone seems to fail to understand the kicking recruiting process. Guaranteed Walk-on, red-shirt, etc. is about as good as it gets for most great kickers. They do not recruit kickers the same as other positions, unfortunately. Few are given D-1 scholarships outright. I would like to know how many offers these BG guys turned down from D-1 schools except their hometown university....that WAS NOT D-1 but will become D-1 next year, am I right? Shane Popham was truly the best kicker in the state this year. Tinius has had a great career, and is deserving as well, but look at the stats for this year. Let's compare!

There is a difference between crying and questioning. Asking for a statistical comparison and about the selection process is just that - asking for a statistical comparison and about the selection process. Maybe Tinius had a bad game in the state finals, but to me, for that night, if I had to choose a kicker I would have gone with Popham.

I agree. I am not sure if some of the other kids can play LB or not but I do know that Flynn and Gamsky (South Oldham) were some of the best LB's in the state last year. Where is Flynn going to school?

 

 

Gamsky and Flynn were the best lbs I saw this year. The two from JC were right there as well.

Tinius averaged 44 yds on 6 punts with a long of 64. He never attempted a FG. The BG team had a bad night, but Tinius was actually pretty good.

^ That'll be interesting in that Tyldlacka will be a punter at UK, I think...with that I hope he has an awesome first game against the Cards...at least 6-7 punts, I hope.

Again, I say, just look at the 3A State Championship game for the past two years. Maybe the BG players just don't perform under pressure or maybe they are just continually over-rated. Their performance (or lack of) will show at the college level.

Popham was by far the best kicker in the state this year and deserves to be on this team. Tinius gets this nod because he has kicked for several years...and Popham had to wait until this year behind two other D-1 kickers the past two years. Should have been based on this season. Popham's 18-27 FG season is the all-time record! Tinius is a good kicker, but will be staying home for WKU and Popham will be at Wake Forest.

 

 

This is what I meant about many good players in the state of KY. There are many good players that did not make the team, it is what it is. The fact we are talking about these players means that the state of KY has made some great strides in H.S football

I rest my case and this is not crying it is just stating the facts. The all-star game he deserved, the STATE RING he earned and will have forever and politics can't take that honor away.

 

To answer another comment: Shane choose Wake Forest for the chance to play D-1 and to get a great education, which is why he is going to college. Football will come 2nd to education. a good deal in my book, Wake pays for 4 years and I pay for one.

We have heard from Popham. In fairness to the two kickers chosen, can anyone share their season stats? Especially if Tydlacka is the kicker and not the punter, etc. How were their seasons?

I still say it is crying to be complaining about a game that doesn't mean anything. What is getting on here and sharing stats going to do? If we all know politics rule at the end of the day, then you have the answer to your question. If you look at the last two state championships you would see a team that has talented players(BG) but obviously lacks a coaching staff that properly prepares its players. It's quite obvious, imo, how unprepared BG has been for Lexington Catholic and Covington Catholic. Not one person has said Popham isn't or wasn't deserving of an all star nod, but let's not lose sight of the fact that all star games are political, I don't care if it's little league, high school, or professional. Once again, be grateful that he earned a state championship ring and an opportunity to kick for Wake Forest and receive an education at one of the finer institutions of higher learning. I hope he has continued success. Do not let an all star nod he didn't receive be such a travesty when he has so much to proud of. Especially when one of the coaches is the BG coach who is going to take as many of his players as he can(and he should if he wants to keep his job and his players' respect). I ask you, with all the recognition he has gotten for this year, is the all star slight really that serious?
