Open Job: Southwestern

Can confirm they are now on option 4, and have had 3 candidates already decline.

Look for SW to either name candidate #4 in the next 48 hours. If it is not named by then, they will look for other options.

This might be a dumb question, but did the first three interview for the job, were offered, and then declined? That is some bad luck for SW.

Absolutely my pleasure to do so. I'm going to start doing this for every opening, HC pay, assistant coaching pay, etc.   I love this state and especially high school football in this state as much as

  • I like GJ, but he has zero high school coaching experience. You think they’ll turn it over to him?

I think the craziest thing you could say is Johnny Hines ?.

Could it be that the 3 that were interviewed were interviewing at multiple spots and different schools and decided to go different places or stay where they are after the situation not being sweet enough to go for the not so appealing situation at hand.

Very few HS jobs in the state are worth packing up your family and moving...especially if you are a well taken care of assistant at good programs.

Very much so. Definitely could be many different things going on and to consider for those candidates. I was just saying that is a tough break for all 3 of your top 3 to decline the offer.

What Southwestern has going against them is they're in a three horse town, and a two horse district. If you want something nice done, it has to happen for PC. It also does them no favors their teacher pay is pretty terrible.

I know the school itself is a little older, but I do remember seeing a nice little "fieldhouse" at SW. How do the facilities stack up to other schools?

They’re fine I think. But not as good as what Somerset is about to put up.

How much is their pay compared to other county schools? I'm not arguing about pay, I've just never heard that complaint coming out of Pulaski or Southwestern.

I’m not sure but I had a buddy who was looking at moving that way who lived an hour away and he’d have made $5000 less teaching.

He seems to be right. Looking at a Rank II or III with 10 years experience it does appear as if Pulaski Schools are about $3500 less than some comparable systems in this area.

...and, that's just neighboring counties. When you expand, let's say, an hour and a half north, west & points in between? It's even worse, even when compared to some much smaller "county" districts. Compare it to communities like Somerset/Pulaski County with the population base? Lake view properties (while obviously not being able to directly access it from your back yard, err, cliff)? It's even worse.

Head scratching bad to be quite honest.

For all things comparison's sake (community with both an Independent school district, county school district, lake, etc. All the things, at least, IMVHO that usually = "Heck of a town", which Somerset/PC MOST DEFINITELY is)?

Here are the Salary Schedules for the '25-'26 school year for Pulaski County vs Taylor and Barren County, respectively.

Pulaski County

https://resources.finalsite.net/images/v1749648865/pulaskinet/zzebfwjkw8da274g3z2m/2025-2026SalarySchedule.pdf

  • Year 20, Rank 1, $63,076.
  • Year 27+, Rank 1, $63,867
  • So, from year(s) 20-27, at a Rank 1? A span of 8 full years in the classroom? It's not even an $800 increase & THAT isn't even until Year 25

MEANWHILE

Barren County

https://files-backend.assets.thrillshare.com/documents/asset/uploaded_file/4422/Bcsd/2ae11fcb-d8f2-41d3-84da-3ef8b9150965/Certified_Salary_Schedule_FY_2025.2026_.pdf?disposition=inline

  • Year 20, Rank 1, $71, 379
  • Year 27, Rank 1, $76, 765 & if you stay to hit the "magic equation" of Year 30 + Age 55? $79, 091

Taylor County

https://resources.finalsite.net/images/v1755103229/taylork12kyus/kdjl14ydva1hunafngbb/2025-2026CertifiedSalarySchedule.pdf

  • Year 20-24, Rank 1, $68,000
  • Year 25+, Rank1, $72,500

When compared to other jobs that are currently open?

Hopkins County/Hopkins Co Central

Comparable type community (county ONLY district, though, No Independent district..while also lacking the greatest body of water on earth ?)

Rank 1, Year 20? Practically a dead heat ($63, 745)....for what PC school's pay Year 27 that is ($63, 867).

But through the next 7-8? And those last 3-5 ideally being the one's you want to try and "cash in" on (27 years in is based off your average 'High 5', 30 years = average 'high 3'? Advantage Hopkins County ($71, 158 & that's year 28- aka an incentive to go past 27).

Gallatin County

They are just crashing the party and putting everybody not named "Jefferson County", "Fayette County", "NKY Metro", Bardstown Independent, etc. on notice.

Rank 1, Year 20? $77,706  ( a whole $14K and some change higher than Year 20 at PCS, and $13,900 more than PCS at Year 27)

Rank 1, Year 27? $80, 276

(a year 27+ teacher in Gallatin County essentially MAKES MORE/ in & around as much as an elementary/middle school level(s) administrator in PCS at year 20)

Added bonus, literally, in Gallatin County? If you're a Math, Science, Special Education (high demand/core content areas)? You get an ADDED $10K bonus, per year, for FOUR consecutive years when new to the district.
