Montgomery County 71 Wayne County 69 (OT)

Featured Replies

After a whirlwind week, the Indians prevail in Campbellsville in OT.  For the record, Neil Terry coached the Tribe.

Wayne lost their "new" starting point guard in their opener on Monday night to a wrist fracture. To those scoring at home, they have now lost their long time starting pg to a blown ACL, back-up pg to a tragic accident and now a junior backup-backup. A freshman handled the duties most of the day.

There was an interesting series of events in the first half as well. Montgomery was in-bounding the ball under their basket. As the cutter cut across the lane, the Wayne defender tried to fight through a double screen and was called for a foul.

The cutter shot a 3 a second or so after the whistle blew and it went in. The basket was called good and was indicated on the score board.

The teams started heading to the other end (Montgomery was not pressing on this possession) preparing for Wayne to inbound the ball and the same ref blew his whistle a couple of times and indicated it was Montgomery ball. There was no foul, technical or other call indicated at that time. Obviously, Wayne's bench went nuts and was T'd up. Montgomery went 1-2 from the line and then scored on their possession. 6 point trip. This is from Wayne fans and also a Hudl clip with sound.

I have not seen the video, but an off ball foul would give Montgomery the ball back, correct?

What's going on with Farmer?  Has he been injured?  He missed the first game and played the second according to the KHSAA scoreboard.

When is Austin Sears going to be eligible? Since he left our region , I was just wondering … Best of luck to him and Montgomery county.

Yes. In this case though, it seemed the foul took place well before the shot. There was contact with Wayne's player and both screeners. After the basket had been counted good, the ref took his place on Wayne's baseline and then it seemed to dawn on him that he called the shot good, on the other side of the floor btw, and also called an off ball foul so he blew his whistle indicating Montgomery ball and everyone went to the other end of the floor including him. Obviously, it's easier to look back at a clip as opposed to real time.

He banged a knee up in a scrimmage. He was wearing a brace in the Montgomery game. Bell also missed the first game as a precaution I think.

I was there watching. The foul and the shot happened around the same time. Wayne County coach went nuts and the official went and talked to one of his partners, after a pretty quick conversation the official signaled the basket was good. One of the other officials was about to inbound the ball not realizing it should be Montgomery basketball. The Wayne County coach said something else to the official and was given a technical. I talked with the official on Sunday, as I know him well and from what he told me about what the coach said, the technical was warranted. It was an odd sequence of events but I do think they got the play right ultimately. The calling official could have done a little better job right off the bat with his mechanics as he pointed the wrong way initially when he called the foul. Probably wouldn't have changed the outcome of the events but might have had a little less confusion from the start.

Is he still there? Would not surprise me if he went back to North Oldham.

The younger brother was dressed and sitting on the bench. My understanding of the rules was he had not played any varsity so he was immediately eligible. Which makes me believe the older brother should be a quick okay. I have heard from several members of the community that the dad did buy a chiropractic practice here in town.

I know someone that spoke directly to dad and he said “I bought a practice here. We are are not leaving”

After he verbalized "three is good" twice and then confirmed with his partner, he then went down on the baseline under Wayne's basket which would be totally out of position for a ref for a Montgomery County possession. Montgomery and Wayne players were walking to that side of the floor as well thinking it was Wayne's ball. Then he blew the whistle and indicated it was Montgomery's ball. That really added to the confusion and ire of Wayne fans and bench. But hey, it's the beginning of the season for the refs too.

Of course it's easy to go back and watch a clip and second guess. There was as much contact with the first screen as the second screen and if the foul had been called on the first screen, the foul would have been on the floor without question. One could even argue the ref's partner missed an obvious lead with the right shoulder on the Montgomery player right in front of him on the first screen.

My guess from what I've heard is the technical was deserved.
