Pulaski is at Garrard tonight and at a tournament at South Laurel this Friday.  I haven't heard about the other two.

Is Fraley playing and healthy this year?

Also, to your comment in the post before this one, are any of the injured players due back at any point during the season? That could factor into how it shakes out come tournament time.

    I see the most parity that we have seen in years. It won’t surprise me one bit if any of the top 6 teams (per the above rankings) end up as the best team. I’m not sold on DCA at the top. While they ha

Any news on West Jessamine, Pulaski, or McCreary? I haven’t seen any scrimmage scores posted on them.

Didn’t West have another kid close to 7’ that wasn’t eligible last year? Wondering if he’s still there and if so his status.

I think Fraley had surgery and missed the summer games.  From what I heard about Anderson's injury I would doubt if he'll be back.  The report was that he'd torn about every ligament he had in his knee.  It sounded pretty bad.  I'll check with someone close to the PC program to see if I can finds out.

PC beat Garrard by 25.  Fraley had surgery in the spring but is doing well so far.  Anderson's injury was pretty bad, torn ACL, MCL, and PCL.  That'll probably take a year to recover from.

Took some time this afternoon to look at some schedules. Lincoln, DCA and West definitely top the list in SOS.

Pulaski not playing as tough as schedule as normal. Would have expected Rock and Somerset to play tougher out of region schedules. Especially Somerset with what they have returning.

I'm not sure where you are seeing Somerset not playing a tough out of region schedule.  They have: Adair County 2 time defending Region 5 Champion, 30-6 last season, and picked 4th in the 5th Region; Clinton County 30-3 last season, picked 2nd in the 4th Region; Corbin 19-11 last season, picked 5th in the 13th Region; Powell County 17-12 last season, picked 2nd in the 14th Region; Metcalfe County only 12-22 last season, but picked 4th in the 4th Region.

Playing teams picked 4th and 5th in other regions is not necessarily playing a tough out of region schedule. Especially with some of the regions you have mentioned.

And please don't ever refer to Powell County as a tough out of region game. They got beat by Model last year by double digits. I don't care what their preseason ranking is in an awful region.

What are you basing sos on? I just looked at the three top teams you mentioned, and then checked Pulaski’s out as well. I don’t see how they aren’t included in that list. I agree on Somerset and Rock. Both teams are expecting big things this year.

Basing it on top teams in the state year in and year out.

Lincoln, DCA and West have 3-4 of those teams on their schedules. To name a few;  GRC, Warren Central, Bryan Station, Lexington Catholic, North Laurel, Madison Central, etc...

And Somerset it picked 5th in the 12th Region.  Sounds like they are playing teams picked around the same level in the corresponding region.  So playing teams picked 4th or 5th isn't acceptable, but then playing a team picked 2nd in their region isn't good enough either?

that’s fair. I’d just argue that Pulaski should be added to the list because they are playing the same teams.

on a side note. What do you think is the best strategy as a coach when scheduling? Do you schedule games you think you can win for confidence purposes? Do you schedule games you know you can’t compete? What is the happy medium?

It depends on the makeup of your program to some degree (do I have a lot of football players, are we an “A” school, what is our fundraising capacity and ability to travel?). But generically:

- mixed first three weeks of December with a couple inferior opponents, a couple even opponents, and one or two superior programs;

- pre-holiday tournament that I can win but will need to beat at least one good team to do so;

- post-holiday one or two game showcase against top level competition (this may also be the All A or 2A tournament or the LIT etc…)

- I try to wrap up all of my district and regional games with 10-14 days left before district tournament; and

- Schedule one major program, one minor program, and one equal program to end the year to test out different things for the postseason and have senior night. All of those should be out of region if possible.

That's a good, solid approach to scheduling.  In my opinion, the main thing is to have your team peaking by district tournament time.  I've seen way too many instances of coaches over-scheduling games and practices and the players are fatigued and definitely not at their peak by tournament time.  In a sport like track, where there's objective data (the stopwatch doesn't lie......) it's a little more straightforward but it's possible in basketball if you know what you're looking for.

Some factors to consider would be the bench depth you have, how old and experienced are your players, and how far you're traveling.
