2007 Harlan

Featured Replies

I will touch on the subject of a coach contacting a middle school player,if you are caught doing it then you should get what you deserve. Whyme you have accused the boys basketball coach at Harlan of these things and I still don't think that you have any basis for these accusations and these are some very serious matters, and when you can hide behind a screen name and say this type of information for your sake I hope that you can prove you statments. (Again for the second time this has to do with some people that might move back to Harlan not anything about middle school kids from the county that might want to go to school there.

seems as though things are getting ready to get very interesting in the coalfields of Harlan County. I'd almost be willing to bet several pair of red and white football shoes on that one. Stay tuned i will keep you posted!!!!!

These matters are very serious and I don't care one bit to private message you and tell you who I am. The Superintendent of Harlan was supposed to of been contacted today about the accusations. This is not made up and it is a very serious matter. I think you know what I am talking about. You can continue to play like you don't but I know that you do. I would be willing to bet some red and white football cleats on it too. This is not rumor, not made up. I know the seriousness of the whole deal and it is not something to be took lightly. Brain, it is not a matter of what the best interest of the kids is in this case. This is a matter of illegal recruiting that will be dealt with.

I hope you have proof and a basis for this. If true, it should be dealt with quickly and strongly. But on the surface, it looks like paranoia. I think some of the "Harlan" paranoia is being generated by County Administration. For instance, can anyone tell me if The County Superintendent really instructed the county coaches not to schedule Harlan any more for any sport in Middle School, or is that a rumor? Also, for my 2 cents again on the issue on where kids should go to school. It should be a parental decision, not the kids. Kids don't have the judgement they need to make this decision. Seems we have a couple folks on here whose mission it is to beat the anti Harlan drum. Hey, here is one for you. Where did James A Cawood's kids go to school. Answer: Harlan! Ask an old timer! One last thing Whyme is a perfect handle for you!

Boys, boys, boys this thread reminds me of the old saying that if you start something on one side of a room and tell each person to repeat it that it willl be a totally different at the end. For the very last time (whyme) if you have all of this proof on whoever it may be then you should get in touch with the KHSAA and get things rolling, if not lets stick to football topics and not the second gunman theory. Still waiting on the private message!

And on the subject of the shoes if that is a source of concern then buy them from someone from outside the county and let the money leave, that makes much more sense.

I didn't mean anything by the cleats. I think it is great what you are doing for the local schools. Sorry that you took it that way.

I really wish Somerset would play Harlan this year. Year in and year out it was always a great game between these 2 teams, it was always a very hard fought game over the last 4 years and was starting to become a great rivalry!

I don't know if he did or didn't BUT if he did than kudos to him. Look back over time, the only way harlan ever played Cawood was when they knew they had a better team. No different in JR. high right now. Harlan can't win so last year they took their football and went home. Seems to me they only play by there rules. If you don't want to play then don't get mad when the field is made up and you are left out. ------ West harlan had to scramble like crazy and still didn't finish with enough games. If you go to all the trouble of forming a new football league go ahead and do the same in basketball. I don't see how that is being anti-harlan.

Let me see now, the true leader of any school is the principal. As he or she goes so does the school. I think your leader went to Cawood. I think a couple in the last 5 or so years are grads from CAWOOD. I am glad they were able to overcome such a bad high school education.

As far as whyme's accusations, I don't have a clue what he is talking about.

However, i don't see anybody moving to harlan for job reasons. Jobs, what's that!!!!!!! Look back over time and tell me one year when harlan did anything in any sport with city kids.

Which leader are you referring to Lungbuster?

I do know that in 1996, I believe, Harlan's boys basketball teams had a very solid year, with the grade school team winning around 20 games, and the jr. high team going to the county championship. Also, Harlan's grade school girls basketball team went undefeated, or at least in county play I think. Furthermore, the grade school football team went undefeated that year. Following that athletic year, the county league voted to expell Harlan from competing in their organization, with only Evarts and Cumberland voting to keep Harlan included in competition.

That being said, I know that Harlan didn't choose to play in the CUMBERLAND VALLEY ATHLETIC CONFERENCE (or so I believe that's the name), but they didn't exactly opt out of the COUNTY basketball league. As for the football program, I'm confident in saying that Harlan barely had the numbers to field a team this year. Without the efforts of Coach Saragus, I doubt the program would have existed this year, and for that he deserves a huge "thanks" from everyone in the community. The New Harlan team encompasses 5 feeder schools, and with the exception of Wallins, the other 4 schools couldn't field their own football programs. Playing in a league where they would have been by and far the smallest school, Harlan may have not been able to field a team by the end of the season. Playing in a new league of Class A programs isn't the worst of ideas in this case, and more kids will be encouraged to play in the newly alligned system. From a basketball standpoint, Harlan stands a much better chance (as do the other small county schools) of fielding a team, and playing on a competitive level. Kicking them out of the county league is a low blow, in my terms and probobly forces them to play fewer games due to traveling expenses. For once, I would love to see Harlan play exclusively in conferences outside the county in basketball, and refuse to rejoin the county league whenever the county decides to include them in the next couple of years.

I second that notion. If anyone played Somerset competively on a regular basis in District 7, it was Harlan. Maybe in the next few years, something can be worked out, because this was my favorite game of the year, from a spectator standpoint.

Who are you talking about? Also, Harlan/Cawood has been a game for many many years. I do believe there was a gap after the big basketball fight in the 1970s and for awhile the two schools didn't play, but in recent memory, there hasn't been a gap. I guess you are two one track minded to discuss the difference between football, basketball, and baseball, but when you are a team with 15-20 players every year, playing teams like Bell and this conglomerated New Harlan team(which was created because no county team could compete with Bell) its a useless venture. Also with the county's more liberal hold back policy, what you had was a team of maybe 40 with lots of true freshmen, playing a team of 14-15 many times with maybe 1-2 hold backs. Ask Cumberland and Evarts if they feel on equal terms with the big Patriots! As to the overcoming part, who said they couldn't get a good education at Cawood? I think the original point was, parents should be able to choose.

As far as whyme's accusations, I don't have a clue what he is talking about.

Thats my point about recruiting. There aren't any jobs anywhere around to recruit families to. That makes the accusations more ridiculous. And as to city kids. Those are any kid who choses to come to Harlan. However, theres no denying that Harlan sports benefits from any talent who chose to attend school in the city from the county.
