South Laurel 33 Somerset 22

I don’t believe many saw this one coming. I know I didn’t.

South passing game pretty much got anything they wanted tonight. They were content to take short dump off and screen passes and were very effective in doing so.

Somerset had their opportunities but didn't capitalize on all of them. Two of the Cards first three Touchdowns came from Somerset giving up the ball deep in their own end with fumbles. Two maybe three times Somerset committed penalties on 4th or 3rd and very long to bail SL out when it looked they would have to give the ball up.

South played like an experienced team tonight and looked like a typical Johnny Hines team on offense.

Somerset lost QB in the 4th, hopefully he can get back quickly.

South Laurel is much improved, and their quarterback runs their system well.  However, this is a troubling loss for Somerset.  If their defensive front didn't get a sack, their secondary provided little resistance.  It seems like so far under Coach Clevenger, that the Jumpers provide a couple of head scratching performances early in the season:  The opening loss to Perry County Central, and the Russell County game, (that required a miracle comeback), two seasons ago.  The Russell County, Knox Central, and Garrard County games last season. It's like they don't come out quite ready for the season to start.  The last 2 seasons have turned out pretty well when all was said and done.  Hopefully this year will as well.  Long way to go to get there though.

Watched it on the Somerset Athletic page and the Jumpers secondary is horrendous. South Laurel did whatever they wanted in the passing game. Coach Hines got South Laurel moving in the right direction. Somerset will need another weapon offensively other than Hughes. I hope Lofton is ok and his injury isn't severe.

The early word on the injury isn't encouraging.  Looked to be on a late hit (that wasn't called) as well.  The backup left the team earlier this week.  So I'm not sure if Hughes will have to be the quarterback going forward, or if they'll try Decker or Wooldridge.  Tough start for the Jumpers.

Good game by QB Mason Griffin. Solid kid. Looked like he was playing catch out there.

I called this game early in the week. I knew most think this was an upset but SL will be a threat in the very near future who will be competing for district titles against Hines former team in PC. I knew SL would win this game and I nearly picked the right score to go along with it lol. I called it 35-20 for the cardinals.

I’d be hesitant to pass too much judgement on Somerset. It’s early in the season and there isn’t a coach in the state that will pressure a teams’ secondary more than Hines. SL is probably more improved than Hines is getting credit for at this point in the season. If he were still at PC, it’d be real interesting to see how PCs seasons shakes out. Very different styles than burns, but arguably the PC faithful had the departure of Hines/welcoming of burns as the next step in the PC rebuild but I’m having my doubts that was the best path for PC

They always say you're an injury away from being a starter if you are a back up. Maybe Clevenger can talk the kid into coming back out.

Definitely the right move for both parties. Hines walked into a great situation at South Laurel with the system he likes to run. Fresh starts are often times seen as a mistake by one or both sides but in all reality sometimes that's what it takes to light a fire under both sides.

I called the South Laurel upset on BGR with a score of 35-14, and I work with several Jumper fans and they all thought I was crazy. South will finish second in the district as long as they don't lose anymore key pieces, unfortunately last night one of their best receivers and senior broke his collar bone again and will likely be done for the year.
