Purposely starting this controversial thread in the school football forum thinking it might gain notice of high schoolers.

Read this morning where another high school football player lost his life in a one car accident this week.  So sad for his family, friends, teammates and all that will miss him everyday from now on.  When I look back on my teenage years I knew I had a misplaced confidence in my driving skills and overblown confidence in my invincibility.  Speeding on country roads where no one had any business driving fast. What was I thinking?  Playing the radio distractingly loud while teammates were celebrating the memories of that night’s victory.  Would I have text while driving if they had existed?  Stupid me….probably.  Young man you are precious to so many that love you beyond measure.  Protect yourself and your teammates with wisdom and judgement beyond your years.  Surrendering to peer pressure….not you.  Be bold to drive safe, you will live to celebrate those Friday nights for decades.

I would agree that teenagers tend to overestimate their driving ability. But there are more than a few adults who do as well, especially in less-than-ideal conditions, such as rain and snow.

Could not agree more, but the older, experienced driver probably knows when we are being stupid.  Not sure the teenage, new driver has that level of appreciation.

Traffic and drivers are 10 times worse now days. It is scary having a 16 year old drive now days.

I think the biggest problem about poor drivers on the roads is the overabundance of Boomers who aren't giving up their keys as they age. I was just ranting about that to my wife last night.

So in the last 5 days:
1.) I almost had my car taken out as I was backing out of my driveway by a 75 year old neighbor who wasn't paying any attention as he drove down out 20mph street at about 35mph.
2.) I followed an older woman who I'd have guessed to be about mid-70s down a winding 55mph road as she drive 14 miles an hour (and almost got rear ended by an SUV coming up behind me in the process.)
3.) Saw a 65-ish year old guy ping-pong between two cars as he drove about 35mph through the parking lot at the Ft. Mitchell Kroger at 5:30pm on a Friday.
4.) Watched a 75-ish year old woman take out 3 cars in the parking lot of a gas station and then just leave without stopping.

Ouch.

The decision by the state of Kentucky to lower the driving age confuses me; if anything, I would like to see it raised. On the other hand, although I know it would be a logistical nightmare to implement, re-testing for individuals over the age of 65 would be something I am in support of as well. As CWB stated above, I see just as many ridiculous driving habits by older individuals as I do by new drivers.

All our border states have allow driving permits at 15 (Ohio is 15 1/2).  Seems Kentucky is behind the times.

At 79 I am in full support of retesting for us super seniors.  Some of us are 79 years old.  Some of us are 79 years young.  Big difference.

In my opinion, that is one area I am completely OK with the state being "behind the times".

It's not like they are out driving on their own. 

Actually it's the kids nowadays are actually behind the times in their driving skills due to now having to work on their grandparents farm.

I guess I'll take a swing at what you want.  Gave up mind reading over the weekend, syk.

A lot of people I grew up with had grandparents that owned farms.  Mine grew tobacco & did square haybales, not the big round ones you see today.  So around 7/8, you weren't strong enough to through tobacco or hay on the wagons, you drove the truck or the tractor.  At 10/11 you were allowed to drive it the mile or so down the road to the barn.  At 13/14 you were driving tractors 15 miles down the road to the other farm to mow/rake/bale hay or disk/plow & set tobacco.

I'm sure some still do that today in some form or fashion.  Not many still do tobacco like they did when I was growing up.

As someone with a 15 year old, I absolutely love the new age for learner's permit.  My son now gets an entire year to practice under my wife and I supervision before getting his license, whereas before he would have only gotten 6 months. This is a win in my book.
