Kevin Durant trade to the Rockets

Featured Replies

It was just announced.

The Phoenix Suns are trading two-time NBA Finals MVP Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in the 2025 draft and five second-round picks. Via ESPN.

Very good trade by the Rockets. Plus this honestly should open the door now for Reed Sheppard to play more next year with Green gone.

That is a haul for Phoenix for a 36 year old. Rockets going all in on next year.

The other way to look at this is the NBA doesn't place much value on second round draft picks.

Not many would have that perspective, though Durant didn't have a ton of value. In the context that Durant is in the final years of his career, you could argue it is a haul. Jalen Green was on his way out anyway (and may be on his way out in Phoenix), so effectively the #2 seed in the West last year traded Brooks and the #10 pick (which was Phoenix's original pick they'd lost in the Durant trade) for KD. The GM and ownership situation in the Valley is bad. The fact that they couldn't get Eason, Whitmore, or Shepperd is telling.

I agree he will get more minutes but the big winner I think Amen Thompson he will be now the primary ballhandler and will get the most minutes, but Sheppard should see an increase in minutes for sure. He will have the 2nd best FG % on the team going into the season now only behind Durant now. I think it will also help Cam Whitmore.

I was saying haul because 8 players/picks. You saying not really a haul I guess confirms that 2nd round draft picks are not worth much in the NBA?

Kind of. To compare, Durant (and TJ Warren was a throw in) was traded to Phoenix for 4 first round picks, a pick swap in 2028, Cam Johnson, and Mikal Bridges. Bane just went for 4 firsts, KCP, and Cole Anthony. Those are hauls. I will say, with the depth of talent, 2nd round picks do have more value than they used to.

I never understood through the latest KD saga why Phoenix was under any obligation to “do right” by Durant. What did he ever do for them?

Deal finally completed today...Because it took 7 teams and 13 draft picks (that will be used to draft players for other teams in 20 years).  The NBA is bordering on being beyond ridiculous with it's dealings and finances.
