12th Region: Regional Tournament 1st Round Preview

I wonder how much districted into Burgin and Casey Co. impacts Mercer and Pulaski in this formula.  Sounds about right though.  I would guess Ashland would be the best team played on anyone’s schedule in this region.  Although, Harlan Co and South Laurel are really coming together in the 13th.

Bryan Station is #10, Ashland #15, and Ballard #20.  At the time DCA played Woodford they were top 10 but they’ve fallen off since then.

  • For those curious about 12th Region enrollments, this was from the 2023-24 school year. Pulaski County is actually just the fourth largest in the region behind three schools that haven't had near as m

It was definitely a great game. If somerset makes a free throw it is over. I still can’t believe they called a technical foul on Lewis after all was initiated by Boyd. No way it should’ve been a techn

Starting on March 5th at 6:30 p.m. none of that’s going to matter at all.

Hey, you’re the one that questioned Mercer by citing the fact that they’re a 10 loss team. I’m just bringing the facts about respective differences in strengths of schedule and how that plays a huge role in W/L record. And yes, strength of schedule does matter in preparing a team for the postseason. Just look at how much waiting the NCAA gives SOS in seeding for the postseason.

Hey? My original post was in response to the idea that the writer had a hard time seeing Wayne being able to come out on top. That is utterly preposterous!! Mercer is the favorite, but they are not Goliath as some seem to suggest. This is a very winnable game for Wayne County, and I think both Mercer and Wayne believe that. The game will be decided by who makes the most plays on March 5th. Not by strength of schedule, win loss record, or someone’s opinion on a message board. Gimme a break with all your “facts”that have no bearing on what happens when the game starts. There’s a lot more to being prepared than strength of schedule.

The gym will be packed every night but that Wednesday session will bring capacity overload.

The facts about their schedules are just that - facts. I’m not arguing based on emotion. And those facts do give context as to Mercer having lost 10 games (which you brought up), and how they could’ve only lost half that (or less) if they had played a less rigorous schedule.

My opinion, and I don’t think it’s a unique one, is that a stronger SOS does help prepare and improve teams. That being said, Wayne is good enough to beat Mercer on a given night, and that could happen in region. No one is arguing that Mercer is unbeatable, just that they’re the second best team in the region this year and are the favorite in this game. For example, they lost to West Jessamine this season (1/3 times) and Mercer is the better team. But I believe Mercer would win a series every time.

As @se7ens said, “I certainly am not saying Mercer is a juggernaut, just that they have the second best body of work in the region.” That’s pretty hard to argue if one is able it look at it objectively.

I’m confident Somerset will produce the most diverse Zone offensive package DCA has seen all season on 5 days prep.  Will come down to shot making to pull the upset.  Need to make 10 to 12 3s IMO and compete on the backboards at a high level.

Bartley and Lewis did not play in the All A game.

Hearing DCA tennis coach is rescheduling matches with region schools because they got “an easy draw” to the finals…Must’ve missed the tournament last season @ Pulaski Co.

DCA could very well roll Somerset, but out of the losers I think Somerset offers the biggest challenge to the Warriors. Somerset shoots the 3 well, and outside of district opponents they are the most familiar with DCA. I fully expect Coach Young to have the Jumpers ready and believing they can pull the upset.

Pulaski and Lincoln will be packed. The two best programs of the last decade and both having very loyal fan bases. This could be the best game of the tournament.

Totally agree with you. I’m satisfied Coach Young will have a great game plan but the players have to make the shots. If they do and limit second shots, they could pull off the upset.

That’s interesting, I was unaware of this.

Bartley was suspended from an ejection, and Lewis was hurt and didn't play his first game until Jan. 17th this season.

For sure, DCA is outstanding defensive team in their zone and pressures.

I also believe Bartley serves as a tough match up for DCA and their two bigs. Not necessarily on the offensive side, but with his physicality I think he could give them some problems defensively and rebounding.
