First Round Blowouts

Featured Replies

Since it seems to be an annual point of discussion for the football playoffs, should basketball also look at limiting the amount of teams that make the district tournaments?   Here's some first round scores:

South Laurel 54 Williamsburg 18

Knox Central 83 Lynn Camp 38

Bell County 90 Middlesboro 36

Pulaski County 55 Casey County 10

GRC 81 Paris37

Owen County 67 Trimble County 21

DuPont Manual 80 Portland Christian 27

Jeffersontown 80 Whitfield Academy 30

Adair County 85 Campbellsville 44

Breckinridge County 96 Cloverport 11

Lyon County 95 Crittenden County 24

Hopkinsville 91 Heritage Christian 41

Frankfort 84 Frankfort Christian 32

Lincoln County 98 Kentucky School for the Deaf 23

Oneida Baptist 105 Red Bird 32

That's not counting the numerous 30-35 point blowouts.  Where is the outrage for basketball that we see in the first round of the football playoffs?  Should only 3 teams from each district make the playoffs and give the #1 seed a bye?  Personally, I'm fine with everyone making the postseason (or 4 teams from each district in football).  But why the double standard?

Basketball rounds can be played much quicker than football.

I would be fine getting rid of districts and start with 16 team regional tournament and can select the top 16 teams in region by RPI.

This. We don’t “lose” a full week of competitive games in basketball as we do in football. The blowouts happen mostly on Monday and Tuesday. Just the different nature of the sports thus making a more heightened response in football. Also there is a natural wider gap of competitiveness in football than basketball due to the number of players used.

If I were to make one adjustment it would be to not wait so long between major redistricting. Because of the ebb and flow of teams naturally, we have ended up with 3 team districts and 6 team districts, sometimes in the same region. I know, for example, that if you took Garrard out of the 45th you wouldn’t have a contender like Lincoln playing KSD. KSD instead would be in the 4/5 game as opposed to the 3/6.

KSD should not even be allowed to play in the district tournament.  Their record for the season was 0-5 entering the tournament.  They are only there for the money.

I like the idea of this, but doubt the District/Region platform will change anytime soon.

IMO, risk of injury.

Sure injuries happen in basketball & it's a contact sport.  But it's not the collision sport that football is.

No worries at all for me.  The big favorites get a lot of bench play and the little guys get a few dollars for uniforms.

I would be 100 percent okay with a prohibition on opting out of regular season play and automatically taking the lowest seed, as KSD does. If you want to play in the district, play a district regular season schedule as well.
