Eagles 55 Commanders 23 (NFC Championship)

Featured Replies

Final. The Eagles took advantage of 4 Commanders in the easy win and will play in their 5th Super Bowl and 2nd in the last 4 years.

Bengals may not have had all their WRs at the time, but the Eagles looked like championship contenders during that game.

The Eagles still have some things to clean up, especially 3rd and long/4th downs. The Bengals did the same thing to them early in that game, with a long drive. But Fangio has made great adjustments all year, and if they can force turnovers like they did today they will be hard to beat. Saquon is just a monster and can literally score from anywhere on the field as can Smith and Brown. Hard to believe that Sirianni barely made it through the offseason and was on the "about to get fired list" after week 4. I've been an Eagles fan my whole life, and this is as good as they've ever looked. The only time I felt better was in 1991 until Randall went down in the first game against Green Bay.

This was a topic during the game thread.

Eagles inside the 2 late in the game. They use a hard count at least three times in a row to try to draw Washington offsides.   Washington obliges and jumps offsides every time.  The officials then say, “If you keep jumping offsides (like the Eagles are trying to induce you into doing), we’re going to give them points”.

I’m as old as the hills but I’ve never heard of that.  A couple of questions leap to mind.

A.  How many times does this have to happen before points are awarded?  It sounded purely arbitrary - sooner or later we’re just gonna give these guys a touchdown even if they never cross the goal line.

2.  What is the actual call?  You’re doing what the offense wanted you to do, so there?  I want to call it the na-na-na-boo-boo rule.

D. Most importantly to many, how are offensive and defensive fantasy points awarded?  Can you imagine having the mythical National Fantasy Championship hanging in the balance here?

In theory it’s to prevent the defense from just continually jumping offside in the hopes the offense finally makes a mistake. Otherwise that nonsense could go on forever. It can really only happen in goal line situations because of the ‘half the distance” enforcement which could in theory go on endlessly. I do believe if it had happened again, especially with the leaping, they would have called it. I think the answer to the how many times question is simply that you know when it’s becoming purposeful.

As far as fantasy points, the defense would lose points as normal. Offensively, I wouldn’t think anyone would get the credit because no one person scored. I would think if there wasn’t a rule addressing this, most leagues will now put one in place.

Understood.  But it’s just as purposeful for the offense to induce.

Look at it this way. Teams use hard counts all the time. And defenses don’t jump offside more than a couple times a game at most. But all the sudden you jump offsides 3 or 4 times in row in a situation where the penalty only moves the ball 6 inches? In a goaline situation, it becomes advantageous to keep jumping because the penalty doesn’t hurt you and maybe, eventually you can get the offense to jump. After the 3rd time I don’t buy that you’re getting “drawn” offside.

When I was officiating we would talk about situations " that make a travesty of the game". I suppose that might have been what was referenced. I saw a bunch of really crazy things happen over 25 years, but never an awarded score in that situation. Can you imagine if that had been the Chiefs game lol?

I've only heard of points being awarded one time. The quote the official used was "we've halfed and halfed and halfed, we ain't halfing no more". I can see that in high school, especially the old days, but not in the nfl. I'd like to see the rule for awarding the points.
