Beechwood assistant coaching staff.

Featured Replies

When Jay Volker was hired at Beechwood with his defensive resume, it wasn't a big secret around the Beechwood crowd that the athletic department had previously asked offensive coordinator Greg Hergott and running backs coach Brandon Berger to remain on staff for 2 years following Coach Rash's retirement for the sake of maintaining program continuity at Beechwood.

Coach Volker was hired with an essential requirement to take on the head coaching job at Beechwood with Hergott & Berger being kept as part of his staff for the first 2 years.

As I understood it, at the beginning of the 2024 season Hergott & Berger were both intent on stepping down at the end of the season. Is that still the case?

If they are both done, who are the likely parties to be calling plays for the Beechwood offense next year? What changes might that bring, moving forward, for the Tigers?

@CWB

If that’s what you understood why bring it to the question today vs. finding out more details before stirring rumors?  You know enough people in the area you could ask before going this route, but I guess that’s what you have todo being Cov Cath didn’t make it as far and looking at ruining Beechwood fans enjoying this week of the victory they just had this past weekend.

Coach Hergott and Coach Berger came up on our podcast last night when we recorded it with Coach Volker. Coach had nothing but wonderful things to say about both of them and was especially appreciative of how they helped him to navigate this transition.

What is ahead, I have no idea. But, there was no suggestion of any drama or anything negative.

Berger and Hergott were studs! I saw that first hand in the early 90's. Have shared this before... back then.... most of our opponents I could get a pretty good handle on predicting their plays. Not Mike Yeagle. He could attack vertically & horizontally on any snap. Throw in great players... good grief they were tough to defend.

The Tigers were ahead of their time.

I didn't realize it was going to get anyone's panties in a wad by talking about future steps for a blue blood perinneal state championship contender of a football program. And I also think you may have mistaken me for someone who dislikes or has some kind of grudge with Beechwood....that's just not the case. I grew up in Fort Mitchell and literally ALL of my best friends from childhood through early high school attended Beechwood. The one and only time you'll ever find me not cheering on the Beechwood football program is the week that they play Cov Cath each season.

Maybe my wording wasn't clear enough in the original post and that got you bent out of shape for some reason. This isn't really a rumor that I'm stirring, as you seem to think I'm doing. Coach Hergott & Coach Berger have made no secret since Coach Rash retired that they planned on retiring from coaching. They have talked about it pretty plainly and openly. I'm a 90s high school grad, as are Greg & Brandon and all of my closest friends from within the Beechwood community, and Greg & Brandon haven't made it any kind of rumor to the folks I know that they intended to retire from coaching at the end of this season. It's been an open discussion. Brandon was originally considering doing it after his son Mitchell's graduation after the 2022 football season, Coach Rash's returement announced changed that plan up after the AD asked Brandon & Greg both to stay on for a couple of years for the sake of program continuity. That was the agreement they made, and I was just asking "is that still the case" because I hadn't heard if the last week or two and getting to win another state championship might have changed their minds about retiring.

I don't know if you've ever noticed, but I tend to start a lot of discussions about coaching changes in football programs around the state during the offseason. You might have noticed some of those threads popping up in the football forum recently. If you haven't, give them a look, they provide some interesting discussion about how football programs are going to move forward in the following year. I don't start those and manage the open/filled jobs thread because Cov Cath's season is over. But you're welcome to have that kind of attitude if you want to. Cool by me.

My sincerest apologies to you for apparently somehow poo-pooing Beechwood's state championship from Friday by talking about something that I've openly discussed with probably 15 or more folks from the Beechwood community over the course of the last two football seasons.

There's no drama or negativity involved at all. It has been an openly discussed plan/intent for 2 years.
