From that description, it would appear that many of these young women are truly looking for a form of "inclusion" - to answer that overpowering teenage need to be a part of something.

As does most teens, not everyone plays sports, ya know. Everyone one to be part of something

Wicca is a relatively new religion using parts of many different "pagan" religions, including witchcraft, druidism, Gaia and others. It started up in England, home of the druids. I don't give it much consideration. I think its mostly wishful thinking. I believe that the voodoo studied in the Caribbean is a much more powerful pagan religion.

The show was a two part show and yesterday I heard some more. A man called in and said he adult wife was leaving him because she is now leaving their church and joining Wicca. Thanks for the feedback I got more from y'all than the show. The lady didn't want to share much on it. She said "buy my book and read it and learn". I've never seen the TV show that was mentioned.

I believe Sully Erna, lead singer of Godsmack is into Wicca. Haven't seen the video in forever, but I think their video of the song voodoo from their first album shows some wicca practices.

Is it a cult or religion?

And what exactly is the difference between those two terms? Is what one person would consider a cult another person's religion, and vice versa?

Here's what the dictionary says (I'm not posting every definition here)...

Cult - A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader.

Religion - (1) Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe. (2) A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.

I think you're right though, a cult memmber would obviously consider their cult a valid religion. I guess it's defined more by the majority of public perception. It's not a stretch to think that all of today's accepted major religions were viewed as a cult by someone at some point in history (like when they started). Not saying that is true, but it's very possible...

I think this is the definition we think of when "cult" is used in a negative way:

a religion or sect considered to be false, unorthodox, or extremist, with members often living outside of conventional society under the direction of a charismatic leader.

Well, by the definition provided, it's clearly not a cult. There's no central authority, every coven does it differently.

I agree, its not a cult.

Adam Sandler did a great bit about joining a cult on his second comedy cd.

Just great stuff.
