These types of threads happened a lot on the basketball side of things when Cal was still coaching. So I figured it was about time we have a thread discussing possible replacements for Stoops. 
 

I know the chances are small UK moves on from him, with his contract being what it is. I know I personally would love to see them move on from him. 
 

So if UK we’re to move on from him, or if he leaves on his own like Cal. Who would you all like to see to be the next coach? 

First, just like Cal, the university isn't moving on from him.

He may retire or take another job but he's not getting fired.

If the job were to come open I'd like to see a coach with some imagination on both sides of the ball. My complaint with Stoops is the same as with Cal, they have both done a great job but, they are running the same stuff they did eight years ago and other teams are way ahead of them scheme wise.

Watching teams scheme pressure rushes on the QB or scheming to get receivers wide open likes many other teams do would be nice.

Even if it would be unrealistic. I would do what they did in basketball and try to shoot big  at first and at least make an Urban Meyer, Mike Vrabel say no. 
 

Once they say no, I would look for a top OC looking for his first head coaching job. Or I would look at the small school ranks and find someone who has had success at a smaller school. We have seen in recent years successful smaller school head coaches being very successful once they get a shot at the bigger schools. 
 

The two top current assistant coaches I would reach out to is. 
 

1. Clemson OC- Garrett Riley who is in his mid 30s, and has had multiple years of top offenses at a couple different schools. 
 

2. Penn State OC- Andy Kotelnicki- who was the OC at Kansas and made them one of the most explosive offenses in the country before becoming the OC at Penn State this year. 
 

Two head coaches that have been successful at smaller schools I would look at is: 

1. Tulane HC- Jon Sumrall

2. Mercer HC- Mike Jacobs 

3. Northern Arizona HC- Brian Wright

FC, I agree with you on a lot, and I guess why not swing for the fences, but UK football and UK basketball are two different animals. Urban Meyer and Vrabel won’t give them a no because they won’t answer the phone.

IMO, Vrabel would only take the OSU job. He’s talked openly before about the pain coaching in college can be and that was before the portal and NIL.

As for Meyer, his resume is HOF worthy as is. If he’s coming off the sweet tv gig, he’s having a chance at a title. ND, USC, OSU or Florida again, etc. Listening to him talk, UC MAY have a chance, but that’s because it’s near and dear to his heart as it’s really where it all started.

Tranq…. If FC thought Stoops game plans are old school, UK doesn’t want Tressel. He was already archaic back when, but I’d buy a UK sweater vest in seconds!

I think it’ll be Sumrall, but I think either of the OC’s mentioned would be great.

If we’re swinging for the fences, I call Jon Gruden. He’s at least got a chip on his shoulder to get back coaching and prove he can do it. With today’s portal setup, he could be viewed as a guy who knows what guys need to be NFL ready and change things immediately. These guys have all grown up seeing his chalk talks.

I completely agree. As I said I know it’s not realistic at all, but you at least make the call. I mean UK paid Stoops as a top 10 coach in America. So UK would have the money if needed to at least make an offer. Plus with 12 teams making the playoffs now, it’s not as wild thinking about UK having a chance to make it. Shoot Indiana football is possibly going to make the playoffs lol. So while I agree Urban probably would just wait for a traditional top job to open. The UK job could possibly be a little intriguing, because just imagine what it does to his legacy if he can find away to win at a UK for football. So you at least make the calls and offers and see what happens. 
 

With that said it probably would be a top assistant or a guy with head coach experience at a smaller school. 

Jon Sumrall would be a fresh change with a high flying offensive scheme and lots of points, give me some entertainment for my season ticket money please.
