How big a gap after Cooper?

I would think no gap to speak of at all.

So where is the big drop off then?  No one close to BG?  After Highlands?  I think seeing Owensboro get waxed by BG after playing CAL very well indicates BG is trouble for everyone.  Didn’t know if our NKY brethren felt Cooper and FTH would be right there.

I think the drop off is after Highlands and right now Highlands and Cooper look pretty close to each other.

Cooper has a big game this week in the Battle of Union.

I would be very surprised if anyone other than one of the top three win 5A.

I would be surprised if anyone outside of BG wins 5A. Nobody in 5A has the speed that is needed on defense to contend with the Purples for 4 quarters. Maybe Cooper can keep pace but ultimately BG pulls away from everybody in 5A.

How is Owensboro still ranked in top 5?

Because they're a very good team that lost to the 2 time 3A state champs and the returning 5A state champs?

Well, that and there is NOBODY of note behind them in 5A.  Owensboro lost their first two games by a combined 31 points.  I'd see them as a more legitimate contender if they at least sniffed a win in week 1 or week 2 but that's not the case.  If their only flag in the ground is "they lost to good teams" they will not go far in the playoffs...where good teams win.  The rest of their schedule looks quite accommodating so that will get them rolling and hopefully some good momentum!  My money currently is on the defending champs BG and their speed - 1, Cooper is loaded with multiple D1 athletes and learning how to man handle opponents - 2, and Highlands has monstrous size up front with very nice playmakers - 3.

Fortunately, NKY will get to see a preview of a possible playoff matchup when Cooper visits Highlands in a few weeks.  That will give all of 5A something to chew on and hopefully narrow down who might be able to give BG a run at the title.  Ole BG (and one of my favorite mascots "The Purples") look primed for a repeat in 5A... even if they did get their nosed bloodied by FD in week 1!  Good luck to all the young men and coaches!!
