Tried to watch the Xavier game the other night and altafiber is having a dispute with CBS sports.

I just took a look and the station (ch 203) I believe, has been removed from the lineup so unlike the past when there was a problem you could still see the station listing just not the content.  Now it is all gone.

I see now why my techs told me altafiber would not be for long in the tv business.   These kind of disputes make people look elsewhere and I think all too many people are going to end up using devices where they don't have to pay for content which means eventually the current system is going collapse or at a minimum be totally redefined.

I see this going the other way. I don't think people are going to sign up for 4 streaming options. Cable is eventually going to be the most cost efficient and robust channel lineup.

I am saying everyone is going to start "stealing" all the content.

The streaming services are getting better at stopping that.

Are you sure?

@sportsfan41 what is your opinion on this?

Might be.  But for me it kinda reminds me of the Napster days with music 25 years ago.  Similar concept but different landscape.  I anticipate jail broken fire sticks, Superbox etc to get shut down eventually at some point, or at least lose a lot of their channels.  BUT until that happens, those devices offer probably $300-400 a month in just streaming service content, not including movies or live content.

I don't think so. Streaming allows the a-la-carte option that people have been looking for for a long time. People are tired of paying for 200 channels and only watching a few of them. I have a half dozen streaming services, watch what I want without all the extra useless channels and am saving about $75 per month from what I was paying on DirectTV . I know quite few people like myself. I think most people will be ok with just a handful of streaming services vs a cable or satellite package.

Per channel cable may be cheaper on a per channel basis (most of which you'll never watch), but overall it's still more expensive AND you have to deal with the possibility of losing channels over contract negotiations.

What streaming services do you currently have and are there any others you are seriously considering?

Youtube Tv, Hulu, Paramount, Peacock, HBO Max (free through my ATT mobile phone service), Prime and Apple TV. Not really looking at any new ones, although I do sometimes watch a few of the free services that I have access to from Roku.

I do get a student discount until the end of the year. But we watch a few things on each service will likely drop Hulu and Apple TV because we watch very little on those two.

On promo though right?  2-3 years.

Guarantee Alta isn't lowering rates though.   I mean you were paying $220 for all those channels and you'll still pay $230 for less channels.    It's a cash grab until they get run out of the TV business.   Only reson I had them was for Tourney time so I could have Tru, TNT TBS and CBS for the games.   But now the NCAA streams all those online.

For sure on raising prices.  They were sneaky with me once recently and I am expecting it again.  It is always more money for less content.
