Spanking Law Proposal

Featured Replies

I am not sure what that means.

I am sure that my boys respond very well to a well-timed, well-placed, and sufficiently forceful wallop on the rear end. Except for their table manners, which I am working on.

Proverbs 13:24 states "He that spareth his rod hateth his son" KJV

To me, the parents that do not discipline their children are guilty in God's eyes for not training them to be adults. Training your children is more than punishing it has more to do with developing a taste in their mouths for what is right. Physical punishment teaches children fear, and respect, we are never to be our children's best friend but we are called to be their parents. You can demonstrate unconditional love and acceptance while also being a parent who spanks their child. Does a child (3 or less) understand not to put their finger in a light socket or an electrical outlet, no they dont understand but they do understand pain. Our problem in this society is NO Responsibilty and NO Accountability.

BTW, if this law passes in KY, I am going to go back 35 years and sue my parents for all the beatens and whippings, and smacks, and tree limbs I took as a kid, just joking but someone will be stupid enough to do it.

Lets just have total anarchy, people in politics are messed up. POLI meaning many and TICS meaning blood suckers, go figure

Perhaps my post was not clear enough.

I am a firm believer in spanking. I realize that not everyone agrees with the practice, but at the Bavier home, it has been around as long as the kids have.

If Hearsay chooses to use "Time Out" instead of spanking, he certainly has that right. Personally, I don't think "Time Out" is worth a hoot when it comes to negative reinforcement.

In my world, a kid needs both positive and negative reinforcement. A ton of the first, and just enough of the second to make them understand that some things are just not acceptable in this world.

We agree then. Particularly concerning plenty of positive reinforcement with just enough negative reinforcement to let them know when they have crossed the line.

I wonder how long it will be until they'll pass a law that mandates what time a child should be put to bed.

They'll probably outlaw hugging your children next.

These lawmakers are confusing discipline with abuse. Discipline comes from a desire to not have your child repeat an offense and hopefully grow into a responsible adult. Abuse usually comes from anger and last I heard, you can legislate emotions. The only people this law will effect are those who discipline their children. Those who abuse will continue as before.

It would appear that we are, collectively speaking, very much on the side of "spare the rod and spoil the child".

Just for clarification. That is a proverb from the Bible and it actually says "spare the rod and HATE the child.

They should outlaw "Time Out"...

Time out for some children is more effective than a spanking. There is not one universal discipline that works the best for each and every child.

My daughter is an attention junkie. It is a HORRIBLE punishment to her for her to have to sit on the bottom step with no entertainment or no one talking to her. She sits there in absolute silence for a good 10 minutes. Seems like eternity to her.

An excellent post, HHSDad.

So thats why I'd have to sit at a table all alone when I'd get in trouble during class. The things I start to understand in my old age ;)

I heard about this on the Today Show this morning. Meredith interviewed the Congresswoman who is going to propose the bill in California and they also had a child psychologist present. This bill will outlaw spanking of children that are 0-3 years old. Congresswoman Liber added that the Gov. and First Lady of California are supporting this proposed legislation. The child psychologist agreeed with the proposal as well, which by the reaction, I think surprised Meredith Vieria, co-host of the show.

Yes, you were DEFINITELY a social creature.

Personally, I hope that this proposed law goes down in flames. I hope (for the sake of the children of California) that the vote is so lopsided that people begin to look at the lady that is proposing this law with a closer eye.

"Now, California's second highest Assembly Democrat (Liber) wants to propose a ban on spanking young children."
