Cincinnati College Prep Academy (OH) 36 Covington Holy Cross 25

Final.  Game was played Saturday night due to unavailability of Stargel Stadium in Cincinnati on Friday night.

Here is the stat summary for the game.

I had major issues with the stat software tonight.  I believe that I have recovered all the individual stats.  Please ignore the box score and time of possessions in the link.  I can’t fix them.  However, I was able to recreate a good box score for reporting.

HC                  7    0    6  12          25
CCPA            16  14    6    0          36

As you can see, CCPA started out strong in the first half.  HC attempted a 2nd half comeback and came up short.  It was the battle of the two star running backs from both teams.  The Lions Rico Johnson ran 22 times for 136 yards and a TD.  The Indians Ulysses Porter rushed 33 times for 220 yards and 4 more TDs.  Porter is only a freshman but he finds himself at the top or near the top of a few KHSAA 1A rushing and scoring lists.

Holy Cross (3-2) has a bye week coming up before the Indians take on Morgan County at home in 2 weeks.

What are Porter’s numbers for the season?

Holy Cross certainly played an eclectic pre district schedule this season.

You take what you can get when you are in a brand new class (HC was 2A last year and is now 1A).  Scheduling was not easy.

From the KHSAA website - this is the link to the class 1A stat leaders.  You can see where Porter is for Rushing and Scoring.  Not bad for a freshman.

Not faulting them for it.   Got to do what you got to do to get 10 games on the schedule.   Just a lot of Ohio schools with long names on the schedule.    Seems like Bellevue would be a natural fit (same class, but different district, same with Dayton) but with the uncertainty of them fielding a team when last season ended, makes sense they'd look elsewhere.

I don't know what was different this year involving Bellevue.  HC had opened up their season with Bellevue every year since 2019 prior to this year.

I know there are some ties with the Cincinnati schools and HC assistant coaches.  I wondered why no Bellevue myself.  HC did scrimmage Dayton in preseason.

All I can guess is that when they were really buckling down to put the schedule together, they were unsure if Bellevue was going to have a team this season, or if that team would play that level (I.e. not play varsity and only field a JV team.)

Holy Cross’s football schedule is downright dreadful.  You have to wonder if their program is teetering towards closing up shop in the future.

Dropping to 1A, coming off several losing seasons, and other teams looking for RPI rankings for the playoffs can affect scheduling. 2023 team abundant with sophomores and freshman and middle school team doing well. Don’t think they will be going anywhere but up.
