Seed or not to seed?

Featured Replies

And yet at regionals, the best teams could play the first or second game. You don't seed at regionals. You don't seed at state. Why change the format of the tournament in the middle of the tournament?

While you are correct, how would you seed for the Region, and or the Sweet Sixteen, since it is would be next to impossible to play seeding games at that level?

Be honest LBBC, those that want to seed do it because they want to see the best teams move on, while those that want a blind draw, just what their team to move on, even if it is, just once in a blue moon.

I would have no problem at all with a blind draw in the districts, if and this is where those that what the blind draw will cry no, if only one team moves on to the Region... Meaning that in the District Championship game only the winner moves on.... That way getting a lucky draw won't get you into the Region...... How about it LBBC, would you agree with this way to play the District, to get to the Region?

Personally I like the seeding. It makes the regular season games so much more exciting and important. Games like the up coming Holmes and Holy Cross match ups with CovCath really mean something more that just beating that school this year, it means a better seed. If you seed by playing each other than I have no problem with each district sending two teams on to the region, as they say on any given night...but if you want to have only one team move on, then I still want it to be seeded....Make the regular season mean something.....

A few things here, most district teams do play each other. Since you brought up Ludlow let me say that they are probably the #1 school against seeding, that is in all sports concerned w/seeding a tourney(ie, VOLLEYBALL).Besides, they got switched to an easier district now so.

I guess what I would like to see done is that all the districts use the same format whether it be seed/blind draw. This way each team has the same chance to be lucky w/or w/out the blind draw or be seeded where you season puts you.

bballcoach, thanks for the input, I DO realize that this would be a proposal and have to be voted on. I does still have to go across the desk of the KHSAA to be put in place, that was my point. The board members, I think so you correct me if I am wrong, can make proposals themselves. This would be a good one to bring up, IMO.

What exactly do you mean by that? Is volleyball all you got to back up your claim that Ludlow is the #1 school against seeding? Because you know what that is all that you got, so I have no clue why you made that statement. If the seeding is done by actually playing each other in the season, then probably wouldn't matter much. But the reason why Ludlow would have a problem with seeding is when the coaches voted on what teams get what seed, because Ludlow usually got shafted in the voting by the bigger schools even if they were better than them. Just like Ludlow in the 03/04 season got the raw end of the deal by the coaches voting. So yeah in volleyball Ludlow has gotten a break with it being a blind draw, but it just kind of makes up for some of the things that has happen in the other sports...And your right Ludlow did get switched to an easier district now, and now good ole Beechwood gets to see what it is like being in the toughest district in NKY now...

So I really dont know what made you bring that up about Ludlow, because you dont have much to back up what you said...But once again I am all for seeding as long as the seeding is done by having the teams play each other in the season. If the teams dont play each other in the season then it needs to be a blind draw...

futurecoach, is the 34th going to be a blind draw this season, or is it going to be seeded? I see you don't play Dixie (the girls do, but the boy's don't) this season, but Ludlow does play quite a few teams twice during the regular season. Last year due to a blind draw, if Dixie draws you, Ludlow doesn't made it to the Region, and you had a pretty good team. Is it Dixie who refuses to play you, or is it the Ludlow Boys, who don't want to play Dixie? The luck of a draw can kill you also......

Can the schools draw in the girls district, but seed in the boys, or is it one way for both?

It has to be all or nothing, boys and girls. As for the vote, it must be a majority to change it, as far as I know. I've heard that in the past, it's always been a 2 to 2 vote for the seeding with Dixie and Lloyd voting for seeding and Ludlow and Villa voting for the blind draw. That's what I've heard, but that may be a false statement. I know that last year it was 4-0 vote for a non-seed.

Absolutely 100% incorrect on the bold. Let me give you a real life scenario. You are in Mason County's district. You know that they year in and year out are going to be the #1 seed. Now if you are Bracken or Augusta or St. Patrick, and you are comfortable that you will year in and year out be the #2 seed or #3 seed, you vote for seeding. Why to guarantee that you will not face Mason County until the championship game. Has nothing to do with the best team but what is best for your program.

Also, I would have to have a clause that the regional gate is split with EVERY team in the region whether they make it to the region or not. It is unfair that the biggest schools or the private schools (since we have no class system in KY) has the advantages over a Deming and Augusta and they get a $5,000 gate share of the 10th region boys gate while the ones that are consistently stuck with the #1 seed and not making it to the regionals. Seriously, year in and year out what is the chance of a Silver Grove with 100some students being able to compete against a)CCHS with close to 2000 students or b)Calvary Christian/Brossart who will be drawing athletes from 5-7 counties?

If you want seeding you have to be willing to share the $$$$ with every team in the region.

Thanks for the info....

I agree and disagree with alot said. I think as far as seeding goes. If you go by win/loss totals it would be unfair due some schools play different teams. As far as in the district some teams don't play each other that are in the same district during the year. As in the case with our district last year three of the four teams were pretty much equal with Mason Co. being the top team.

The blind draw worked fine and to me was fair. Some may disagree.

This year is another story. The boys are still pretty much equal with the exception of Mason Co. of course. On the girls side, I think it should come down to two teams. I love my Lady Panthers but bottom line they are not as good as the Lady Bears or the Lady Saints. It would be a shame one of them draw Mason Co. and did not get to play in the district against each other.

I know there will be some that will agree with me and some will not. But its just my opinion. Bottom line draw is a good idea, and so is seeding.Sometimes it should come down to good sportsmanship.

And yet at regionals, the best teams could play the first or second game. You don't seed at regionals. You don't seed at state. Why change the format of the tournament in the middle of the tournament?

No what I said was that your if you dont seed in district then the actually 1 seed could play the actually 2 seed then the loser wont even get to go to the region. Now granted the 1 seed could lose to the 4 seed in the first round but its less likley. And the reason we dont seed in state and regionals is because you dont play every team in the region and in the state so how can you get a correct seeding like you can in district.

Is it possible to put one of those polls on this thread?

Honestly I have no clue at all in the boys if it is seeded or not this year. Also I never said I wanted it to be a blind draw. All I know is before this year that for the last 5 years or so Ludlow has had really good teams so I dont think it would the case that they would be afraid to play another school. I know I would rather it be seeded by having teams play each other. But if they dont play each other and have the coaches seed it then I dont like it at all. Because there would be alot of coaches that would seed in a way that would give their team a better matchup then actually seed by what teams are better. As I said before Ludlow already got shafted before a couple of years ago by the coaches seeding it. When that was the one of the best Ludlow basketball teams in school history, and one of the best in the region that year. Yet they still got stuck having to play one of the best teams in the state that year in CovCath. So in situations where the seeding is determined by coaches then yeah I would rather it be a blind draw, because even though you might get a bad draw. It is still better than getting screwed over by other teams...

But honestly to answer your question I have no clue at all rather if they have to do the same in the district for the girls and boys or not. I know I will try to ask a few people to try to find that out though...

I like seeding in the district because it makes each district season game mean more. We have done it in our district since around 1980 and it has worked out great. Our school is the smallest in the 56th but we have won our fair share of top seeds and district titles in both boys and girls tournaments(9 district championships for the boys and 12 for the girls).

It really doesn't matter in the region and state tournaments. The blind draw is okay when you get to that point. Seeding wouldn't work for the region and state anyway, because the only way it could be done is for a committee to select the seeding, which wouldn't work...too political.

My point is that Ludlow will never vote for seeding so that they have a better chance for their teams to get to the region and it don't matter how good their teams are. You are going back a few yrs. Who were they better than, HC, NDA or Holmes.

Bottom line is each team in the district should have to play each other at least once and then seed the tourney. This way there is no bias w/the coaches doing the voting.

I brought up volleyball because Beechwood has gotten the shaft put to them the last two yr w/the blind draw. They were ranked 3/4 all yr both yrs and did not get to regionals due to the blind draw. Is this fair to the girls? High school sports is for the kids not the schools getting recognized for playing in the region where they have no chance of getting past the first round. It's great for a team to get to the region but how rewarding is it to get there by beating a team w/5/6/7th graders. Sorry, I know this is a different sport but involves seeding. I would never have brought this up if you wouldn't have mentioned Ludlow getting the shaft. They put the shaft to the better teams/players by voting for the blind draw to give them a better chance. Heck, if your'e so good, vote for the seeding, play where they put you.

Anything that someone doesnt' see eye to eye on w/you, never has enough to back anything up so I am probably wasting my breath.

By the way, are you talking about the boys or the girls? This is the girls website!

So you are okay with the, we are the district runner up this year, because we got the lucky draw, banner on the wall?

So how about then only the winner moves on to the Region. How about making every game in the District mean something?

How about you keep all the money that you sell in tickets, why should a team that sells hundreds of tickets split the pot with someone who sell only a couple.... BTW how much money does the KHSAA keep? I thought all the money less expenses in the District, Region, State games was taken by the KHSAA.

Unless things have changed whoever host the district/region games takes out expenses from the gate money and the rest is equally divided by the participating teams. KHSAA gets nothing from these two tourneys. Of course, the host team gets all concessions.

In football during the regular season/playoffs, expenses are taken out and the gate is split between the schools. Now that is messed up!
