Yeah lets start doing it by hours till. I can't wait.

"Coach, do you want us to wear our cleats or the snow shoes?"

I'm feeling a little better knowing that, soon, I'll be hearing a smack of the leather and a crack of the bat, er ping.

Twas the night before Feb. 15th, when all through the Bluegrass

Not a creature was stirring, except the snowplows.

The uniforms were folded and still tucked away,

In hopes we could start, on a much warmer day.

The "newbies" were jittery, all nervous it seems,

While visions of Varsity, were all in therr dreams.

Freshman, grinning and with not much to say,

As they were eagerlly awaiting, this much dreded day.

Sophomore, much noisier and causing such a clatter,

that the Juniors turned around, to see what's the matter.

Seniors are huddled around, in their own little click

and waiting their chance, to swing the big stick.

Away to the Dugout the players all sped,

To see the Coaches, some they even dread.

The speech soon began and all eyes were on him,

expect for the Senior star, he was whispering with Tim.

When, what to all our wondering eyes do see,

but a clipboard, ballbag and fungo, plus a Tee.

"Now Men, its important and hard work"....he began,

"I expect you to arrive early, as often as you can".

The team goal is discussed and priorities are set,

some are excited, some nervous, some fret.

They all follow the star player, to get loose and run,

As he steps to the circle, he says "This won't be fun".

They'll run from pole to pole, with their hats on so tight,

you don't dare pass a veteran, but give it all your might.

The vets eyes will gleam, as they get their first at-bat,

while the shout is heard, "Spread out more than that".

So Baseball has began, even though not spring,

all teams are chasing, that same KHSAA ring.

The team has a chance, to be very good,

the veterans will lead, like we all knew they would.

They''re starting today, not for money or fame,

but Feb. 15th is about "The Love of the game."
