These are out of 275 total teams listed on the RPI report today. These will be how many in each Region are in the Top 100 overall and also the top 50.

Region 1 - 8 top 100, 5 top 50

Region 2 - 4 top 100, 3 top 50

Region 3 - 5 top 100, 2 top 50

Region 4 - 7 top 100, 3 top 50

Region 5 - 6 top 100, 1 top 50

Region 6 - 7 top 100, 4 top 50

Region 7 - 7 top 100, 3 top 50

Region 8 - 9 top 100, 6 top 50

Region 9 - 6 top 100, 2 top 50

Region 10 - 7 top 100, 3 top 50

Region 11 - 8 top 100, 5 top 50

Region 12 - 6 top 100, 4 top 50

Region 13 - 5 top 100, 3 top 50

Region 14 - 3 top 100, 1 top 50

Region 16 - 6 top 100, 3 top 50

Region 8 has the most top 100 with 9 teams followed by Region 1 and Region 11 with 8. Region 8 also has the most in the top 50 with 6 teams followed by Region 1 and 11 with 5 each.

Interesting. Thank you for putting in the work to rank the Regions!@TilghmanPride

If each team were ranked this way, we'd have some interesting entries into a Top 10 - 8. Owensboro Catholic, 9. Harlan, and 10. Pulaski County. New to the Top 20 - 13. Martin County, 15. Grant County, 19. South Warren, and 20. Hazard.

Dropping out of this Top 20 would be last week's BGP's George Rogers Clark 6th to 21st (-15), and Simon Kenton to 34th (-14). Covington Catholic would see the biggest drop (-16) to 17th.

* See screenshot below.

Knowing it skews the RPI, I'm curious how much/few out of state (OoS) games a Region plays effects weighting a Top 50/100? Looking at Region 8, four of the nine Top 100 teams have played zero OoS games, including two in the top 50. #7 Collins and #34 Simon Kenton each have only one OoS game.

There's a six games played range too (just in a Top 20 sense) between Lex Cath's 21 and Cov Cath's 15.

*adjusts blue tinted glasses*

Cov Cath's five OoS game schedule drops Region 9's rank even though three wins came against very good Florida teams; a fourth versus an Ohio school with an average record (but a strong strength of schedule) doesn't help either.

From looking at your Region 1, you all play a fair number of games against Tennessee and Illinois teams, and you win a lot of them. Way to represent! And everyone has played at least one OoS so far this season. Imagine how much stronger Region 1 would look if you could use those games you need to schedule to boost RPI. East and Mountain Regions also take a hit, having to fill shedules with Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio. RPI in hoops seems to multiply the problems we already have in football, and now every other bracketed state tournament sport.

Another way to use RPI to look at Region strength maybe, is to use a median figure from teams within the Region. Those rankings would look like this [with team(s)]. Interesting to find who our middle of the road teams are, and wondering if they better show a Regions' strength. Some regions are top heavy, some solid in the midrange, some ... May just be a different way to peel an onion.

Region | Median RPI | Median Team(s)

• 1. R1 100 Fulton Co.

• 2. R6 109 Iroquois

• 3. R15 110 Magoffin Co.

• 4. R8 116 Oldham Co. (91) / South Oldham (141)

• 5. R3 117 Hancock Co.

• 6. R13 128 Barbourville

• 7. R7 131.5 Central (125) / KCD (138)

• 8. R11 132 Frankfort

• 9. R16 136.5 Rowan Co. (133) / East Carter (140)

• 10. R12 142 Southwestern

• 11. R2 144 Hopkinsville

• 12. R10 153.5 Augusta (146) / Paris (161)

• 13. R9 163 Ludlow (151) / Beechwood (175)

• 14. R5 166.5 Campbellsville (163) / Hart Co. 170

• T15  R4 175 Clinton Co. (166) / Greenwood (184)

• T15 R14 175 Lee Co. (168) ) Leslie Co. (182)

I’ve been saying for a few weeks the 8th is strong and deep as it has been in quite some time.

Region 5 is extremely weak across the board this year with Taylor County and Elizabethtown starting to separate themselves from the rest. Whomever comes out of this region will be a big underdog in the first round of the sweet sixteen. Coach James Haire of Elizabethtown has his team playing better as the season progresses and should be considered the favorite in the region.

RPI will never be viable for use in other sports - I'm not a fan of it in football either but let's not lose time on that - until they fix the out of state component.  I'd sooner they ignore the out of state teams entirely than do what they currently do.  Warren Central has played two out of state opponents.  Both are over .500, one very much so.  Goodpasture Christian is rated by MaxPreps as the #10 team in Tennessee (Massey has them 9th), and they're 16-1, with the only loss coming to Warren Central.  How would any formula ever make sense to ascribe them a .50000 value?  I get the challenge facing the KHSAA when using those teams in calculations, but then you should just ignore them.

I agree, the 8th is represented well! Some of the top players, teams, and coaches in the state!
