St X. And Bracken County played in the first round of the 1955 Sweet 16.  I know St. X was ranked but I’m not sure about Bracken County.

Hazard was champion and Adair County was runner-up.

Winner (?) declared when the footsteps of nine tiny reindeer hit my roof ~ midnight.

? Final hint - The eventual Sweet 16 champion is not in "This Top 25."

Hazard defeated Adair County in the finals in 1955.

According to a Louisville Courier-Journal article from "this" year 438 schools fielded teams for KHSAA District play. 69 KHSAL teams also still vied for their own separate state championship.

Teams by region ~

? As many have deduced - "This Top 25 is from 1955." Thanks for playing along.

Merry Christmas! ?

Grant County and Williamstown were only in the 10th Region for a few years.  They were in it 1953-1956 I believe.

Interesting (to me anyway and maybe our resident historian @gchs_uk9) how schools shifted Regions over time.*

Re: 10th Region

• Scott County schools (Georgetown, Great Crossing, Stamping Ground and Sadieville) all in the 10th in '55, slide over to the 8th after consolidation, then spend decades there before settling in the 11th in '05/06.

• Clark County + Winchester (GRC) and Montgomery County + Camargo (MoCo) in the 16th in '55 too before anchoring the 10th's southwestern flank.

Love that there were so many small and sometimes now forgotten towns that poured their community pride onto the hardwood for a chance to play in the Sweet 16.

Indeed, just for those four years. The schools that made up the new Grant County (Corinth, Crittenden, Dry Ridge, and Mason) all played in the 9th Region prior to 1953, regularly competing against teams like Dixie Heights, Highlands, and Newport Catholic. Grant and Williamstown shifted to the 8th Region for the 1956-57 season and played in a district with the Carroll, Gallatin, and Owen teams. In 1966, when the biggest alignment shift prior to 2005 took place, Grant and Williamstown (and Owen County) moved into a district with Scott County and Georgetown.

Will never forget Billy Hicks complaining after that move that "when you think of 8th Region basketball you think of Scott County" followed by Oldham County coach Gary Forrest saying "we've won three of the last five region titles and you've only won one!"

That was an extremely stretched region. If you only drive US 60 from Winchester to Ashland, which would have been the case almost the entire time since I-64 was just then being built, that's a 2.5 hour trip today. I can't imagine on worse roads with slower busses 75+ years ago it would have been any quicker.

Wow, 10 of the 15 Eighth Region teams that year don't even exist anymore....

Without consulting any of the books, I would have said 1957 - and I'd have been wrong.... ?

Bonus points for fleshing out the details. You've been hiding your light under a bushel @JPamis. Hope you post more often!

Merry, Merry, and
