An interesting situation I forgot to mention was a husband Keith Young coaching the boys team for several years at Adair County and he was replaced by his wife Juanita who coached the Adair County boys for one season. There are numerous father/son coaching families but that is the only husband/wife coaching family I’m aware of.

Danny Bates coached at the old Letcher High in the 70’s and 80’s and his son Danny Jr at Whitesburg who went 30-6 during the 2001-02 season when he won the 14th region. Charles Duncil coached at Lee County in the 80’s and his son Brent also coached at Lee County for one year in 2000-01. Bob Creech coached several years at Wolfe County and his son Robert “Bull” Creech is currently coaching at Wolfe County as well. John Quillen coached Hazard for one season in 1970-71 and his son John Michael Quillen also coached at Hazard from 1991-1994. Mike Jones coached at Cawood, Jackson County, Todd County, Harlan Independent, Clay County and Harlan County also I think. His son Michael also coached at Harlan County and it may be another one of his sons coaching Harlan County now as well. Steve Butcher coached a few years at the old Mullins H.S. in Pike County and I think he had a son who coached the girls team at Pike County Central and possibly Mason County. Wendell Wallen Sr. coached at Meade Memorial and Johnson Central and his son Wendell Jr. coached at Allen Central and Pikeville. I think there were three Deaton brothers from Breathitt County that served as head coaches; Granville at Cawood and Wolfe County, Carl at Green County and J.P. Deaton was the girls coach at Breathitt County after serving as Fairce Woods assistant coach for several years. Carl’s son Mike Deaton has also been a head coach at a few schools Caverna, Corbin, etc.

Hazard defeated Adair County in the finals in 1955.

Didn’t 7 of the schools make the state tournament? Central City, Newport, Somerset, Henderson Barret Manual Training, Adair County, Berea and Mayfield.
