Hazard 56 Shelby Valley 48

I knew this would be a great game. Congratulations Hazard.:thumb:

Watched the game on WYMTNEWS.com.Looked like an ugly game.Loads of turnovers, but congrats to Hazard.

Back and forth game between two solid teams. Lots of turnovers and physical game. Valley did a good job on Hicks (16pts) made him work for everything. Jones had a big game on the boards (16 reb) and 3 blocks. Valley has a very good team will be interesting to watch them next couple of years.

Congrats to Hazard for the W on a hard fought game! Congrats for never giving in or giving up no matter how ugly the game got.

This game illustrated how good Hicks really is. Valley double and triple teamed him all night and with limited shots he still managed 16 pts. and literally led the Bulldogs to a big win. Valley has a very nice team that gets after you from inline to inline. I thought the key to the game was the second quarter Bulldog defense limiting Valley to 4 pts. Jones' blocks were huge also.

Qman, did you see this game?

Hicks wasn't double or triple teamed all night. SV played a man in his face but it was man on man.

I agree. They just flat stuck him. In his face one on one. He did keep his cool and with the exception of a few ill advised shots played well. SV will be a powerhouse as soon as they find one individual that can step up and score. The Justice kid was impressive. Good win for the Bulldogs and a great coaching job at Hazard for changing the way the game was going after the first quarter.

I was at the game. They did play straight man for three possessions until Hicks came off the screen in the corner and drained the three. They mostly played a box and chaser and trapped him whenever they could. That comes from not only my view of the game but also one of Hazard's assistants. This is not taking anything away from Valley. Until another perimeter scorer steps up, thats the way I would guard the Bulldogs.

Will they actually test this team with a few trips out of the mountains, or will they be continuing to play 15th Region schools four and five times per season? Just want to know what to expect if they make it to the Sweet 16 during this up period.

Shelby Valley has a chance to be very good over the next few years, but they will need to make some trips to the LIT or KOB(much like South Laurel) to experience different styles, better competition, etc. if they want to be a state title contender.

The radio was saying how frustrated Hicks looked.

Why was he frustrated?...Was it because of his teamates or was it because Valley's defense or what?

I didnt see any double or triple teaming Hicks.Matt Williams keep them in it in the 1st half and the rebounding of Jones throughout the game is what won this game for Hazard.

Not hard to get 16 pts when you go to the line and get free ones. Valley did a great job on him. Chased him all over the floor the first quarter. Then for some stupid reason they went to just a straight zone for a little while, maybe trying to give the chaser a little break, that was when Hicks hit the shot from the corner. Jones kept them in the game with rebounds and the big Campbell kid hit a couple of shots outside that he doesn't usually take and make. Some other people finally stepped up for the Dogs, that is what kept them on top in this one. Nice win.

I am Sure they will starting next year and so on but not this year with so many Freshmen & Sophs. Have to bring them along a little slowly to help them mentally. They played in Corbin Tourney in December plus this is Virgie and if you know anything about Virgie basketball you know they always played down state against top competition.
